Beowulf prepared to battle with only his metal shield and sword ran after the dragon, but his men did not. This is not the first time Beowulf had been put in a predicament where he had to face a battle on his lonesome. His ability to obtain and enormous amount of courage and strength shows that he will always defend his country proves that he is the most righteous individual to be king.
