Music Educators Journal, v93 n1 p38 Sep 2006

In this article, the author presents a framework for measuring the validity and appropriateness of multicultural materials for inclusion in the music curriculum. Music educators continually try to help students understand music within its cultural context. To meet this goal, music materials should approach some level of authenticity. The author emphasizes the three levels that musical authenticity must consider: (1) music--the formal properties of sound; (2) meaning--its surrounding context; and (3) behaviors--the means by which music is taught, learned, and performed. He also talks about bias and cultural validity. (Contains 1 figure, 22 notes, 8 online resources and 4 resources.)
