Obesity is an immoderate amount of body fat and weight gain. The increase in body fat causes adiosopathy and dysfunction of fat tissue which can lead to metabolic, psychosocial, and biochemical disorders. The biochemical mediators released by the adipose tissue cells leads to chronic inflammation which prohibits blood flow and causes hypertension, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

In this country, we have overt ideas about what the "ideal American body" is supposed to look like and obese people do not fit this standard. This can lead to conscious, or subconscious, bias where a provider judges the person with obesity. This can present as treating the person as if they can just "lose the weight," or assuming that obesity is just from overeating instead of other conditions like immobility or hypothyroidism to give some examples. Bias can also present as not attending to the patient's increased care needs.

Interventions that I would included in Ashley's care of plan are food diaries to see her caloric intake, the types and amount of food she eats and eating habits. Also, formulate an individualized eating plan with Ashley. Consult with a dietitian is a must. Also, establishing weekly goals to encourage the patient and to keep track of the progress. Assisting with her ADLs to monitor and encourage increase in daily physical activities. I would also promote an open communication with Ashley to avoid criticism and judgment.

Obesity is a chronic disorder and/or condition defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat also known as adipose tissue. The fat tissues/cells can also become enlarged and increase in number. The fat tissue cells can also release chemical signals or compounds (the biochemical mediators) that can lead to inflammation and further increases the risk of getting chronic diseases such as (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease).

We might assume reasons for a person's obesity without doing a thorough evaluation of their situation. Such as assuming a person doesn't care about their health, they're lazy, gluttonous, or ignorant. A nurse should consider medical and social factors influencing the individual's BMI.
