Cristoph Scheiner discovered the optic nerve, he was a German mathematician. In Greek and Roman times a hollow optic nerve resulted in loss of flow to and from the brain causing blindness. In Medieval times physicians found that a fixed dilated pupil was a symptom of obstruction of the optic nerve. Later on, in around the 17th century, people started understanding more about the optic nerve. Eventually there were tools that were made to help people better understand the optic nerve, this resulted in medical breakthroughs.

If there weren't neuro-ophthalmologists a lot of diseases and eye problems would go unsolved. This job helps society because they specialize in the nerves in the brain that connect to the eye. Neurologists could not do this job without the ophthalmology part, and ophthalmologists could not do this job without the neurology part. This is why there are neuro-ophthalmologists.
