What Inspires Me to Teach

It started when I was a student tutor. I saw that I could help others and make difference. I've always believed that the students can succeed and I want to be someone who helps them get there.

My favorite teachers in school were always my Math teachers. I loved the way that they taught problem solving, had analytical mindsets, and were always up for a challenge. I also wanted to teach others that Math wasn't so scary, and is actually the reason behind why the world works the way it does!

I started tutoring in HS and really enjoyed it. Since, I've gained inspiration from knowing I can make a substantial change for the better in students' lives by getting them to appreciate math - at least a little - and reframe their thinking about how much they can do it.

I've always been able to explain math to where it was understandable. I credit this to my parents who are both teachers -- math and music. I've always thought that it the ability was in my blood.

I have always enjoyed (1) helping people in any way (2) explaining concepts so that others can understand them. Mathematics is what I enjoy, and I love the feeling when I see that a student truly understands something that they did not understand before.

Judith Covington: It sort of happened by accident. I was not sure what to major in, so I majored in math so I could have my dad as my advisor. Then when I finished my grad school visited my school and that seemed like a better idea than going to work a real job. Then I was going to leave before PhD but found out that there was no job security. Time passes and I am teaching a night course that I dread teaching but once I get there the time flies. I think the was when I realized I truly loved what I was doing.

Until later high school, I was scared of math and didn't want to practice or study. I had a teacher who taught math in a way that I was inspired to try, even if I didn't succeed right away. I hope I can help my students come to the same realization.

The simple answer to a "close" question is STUDENTS. It is a joy to help students to grow and navigate in math courses. I use GPS, first of all with myself, and then with individual students, according to where each student is. Removing barriers (like fear) helps growth.

I started teaching math by accident also. I had tried a few things after college and even relocating to the Houston area. After coming back home, I saw an ad for a dual enrollment instructor. At that time I needed an job. Having a masters in math, I knew I was qualified. Once I started, I found a love for teaching.
