The British were desperate and even sent a delegation to China and begged the emperor to open up his country and take some British products in exchange for tea. The British presented to the emperor all sorts of trinkets but he remained unimpressed. To get the tea that they wanted, the British had only one thing to trade that many Chinese craved even more. So the British sold opium to China and used the money to buy Chinese tea. Also there were spices in India and land for them to station their armies. After they took over India, they used the land to grow opium poppies, which they sold to China. They then took over Indian trade. Since they took over China and India, they needed a place for their boats to travel through, which just so happened to be south-east Asia, and if they could take over Southeast Asia, it would be beneficial to trade from Britain to India/China. They could also use Southeast Asia for a trading place for the Chinese tea and opium.

When the Dutch state created the Dutch East India Company, it granted the organisation the power to wage war, conduct diplomacy and seize colonies throughout Asia. The Dutch East India Company was intended to make money and battle competing European empires. At that time, the Asian market was the largest and spices were in great demand in Europe. The Dutch controlled the Bunda Islands that produced Nutmeg which was highly sought after. This helped the Dutch to become very wealthy and that motivated the British to set up a port in Asia, Singapore.
