This line is gripping as it highlights Stephens paranoia and helps ton emphasize his fear and his cautiousness when out in the middle of the night. He can feel something has changed, and has become more and more aware of what is around him because of his fear. The use of synesthesia in this moment implies that he can feel the change of atmosphere as you would feel for different "texture[s]" and cloths.

This line emphasises how horrifying the situation is for Stephen as he realizes that there is someone behind him. The use of a hyphen gives him this pause that allows him to think and analyze who's behind him. Also, the use of the verb hear and associating it with him figuring out his size

Frayn uses hyperbole which stimulates the idea that there might be so much confusion that a child like Stephen probably can't handle. The conflict between having to chose to take Kieth's side or K's mother's side, could stress him out because of what a rounded character he is. The use of hyperbole also adds a sense of humor to the tense moment in the chapter. The reader perfectly understands that Stephens head is not literally going to "burst", but due to whatever he is thinking or planning behind K's back, could potential make him feel as if his head is holding too much that could "burst".

To add to Stephen's confusion in this chapter, Frayn uses rhetorical questions to portray Stephen's conflicted feelings on whether to tell Keith or not. His questioning underlines the turning point that has begun of Stephen moving away from Keith's authority and becoming more independent with his decisions, even though, it seemed as if Stephen's world revolves around Keith.
