In this inquiry, we will explore the lives of convicts, free settlers, and First Nations Australians during the early years of British colonisation. Students will investigate how and why people came to Australia, what daily life was like in a developing colony, and how colonisation changed the lives of those who lived here. Through historical excursions, primary and secondary source analysis, and collaborative inquiry, students will examine significant events, people, and places that shaped Australia's identity.

This unit will also explore how different groups experienced life in colonial Australia, including the injustice faced by First Nations peoples and the harsh realities of the convict system. Students will be encouraged to think critically about the motivations for colonisation, the consequences of British settlement, and the long-lasting impacts on Australian society. The unit builds historical understanding while fostering empathy, ethical reflection, and intercultural awareness.
