UNICEF represents the acronym of the United Nations Children's Fund. It is a United Nations fund, created in 1946 to help children who were victims of the Second World War. UNICEF is now engaged in humanitarian assistance for children and their mothers around the world, mainly in developing countries. UNICEF is economically supported by voluntary contributions from countries, governments and individuals and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.
UNICEF's aims include the promotion of safe abortions, family planning education and the use of contraception.
This organization deals with various ethical issues: it supports the adoption by states of laws that guarantee LGBTQ couples and their children legal recognition of their status. It also uses the ABC strategy ("abstinence, be faithful and consistent condom use") adopted in various international interventions to prevent AIDS. Or again in 2013, with the OMS, it published an integrated plan of guidelines for the prevention of infant mortality caused by pneumonia and diarrhea, including access to safe abortion services among the recommended strategies. Furthermore, UNICEF supported children damaged by the Syrian civil war with the largest fundraiser in its history.

Founded by Michael Kellogg in 1999, in just a few years it has become one of the most used online dictionaries ever. One of the most interesting things about this dictionary is that it is interactive. In fact, in addition to carrying out the mere function of translation, it is possible to subscribe to various forums, in which are discussed topics, expressions and translations from one's own language to the one of interest. Among the various features, there are "grammar and usage", "verb conjugators", "tools", "lists", and "the word of the day". I personally think that this dictionary is very advantageous, since it offers several useful functions for learning the language better. Among these, the most used by me are pronunciation, distinction between formal and informal words and expressions, conjugations of verbs and synonyms. As regards the pronunciation, I find very interesting the distinction between the various accents, for example the British or American one. It is fascinating also because it is possible to search for the meaning of phrasal verbs, which are widely used in the English language. In general, it is a very reliable and correct dictionary. For example, if you are looking for a word that is mainly used in American English, it will appear the word "US". For example, elevator is said in one way in American, and in another in English, that is lift; therefore what differs is not only the pronunciation, but the word itself.

She has 3 children, so she often asks me to go to London to help her. Every time I go there, I have to use my language skills to navigate in the city. I have always noticed a great diversity between the two cultures. I remember that one day I was walking with a friend of my sister, who is English, and while we were talking I found myself involuntarily making a typical Italian gesture with my hand, which can be translate in words as "what?". I did it because she told me that another person would have join us, and I replied "who is it?" making the gesture with my hand. She was dumbfounded, and she immediately asked me what that meant. At first I didn't even realize I had done it; it was an involuntary movement of the hand. So I explained her the meaning and she laughed, finding the gesture strange. A similar event made me reflect on how many of the things we take for granted are instead a cultural product, and that this can present an obstacle for the understanding and the communication across cultures.
