Now how exactly do these types of drugs affect the brain. Well, "many psychoactive drugs trigger activity along a pathway of cells in the brain called the '"reward pathway"' (Pruitt 428). To understand the effects, we need to know what dopamine is, which is a chemical that releases when an individual experiences nice sensations "such as eating a delicious dessert or cuddling a puppy" (Pruitt 428). However, when drugs come into play, the body releases extra dopamine, which makes drugs feel very pleasurable and the body ignores "the harmful effects of the drug" (Pruitt 428). Then this leads to users wanting to feel hat extra dopamine rush constantly, and leads to drug cravings (Pruitt 428). If the person proceeds to keep on using drugs, then their brain gets used to that dopamine rush and craves more dopamine, so "the user no longer feels pleasure from normal activities" (Pruitt 428).
