My favorite technique is looking at what happens and why. This would explain why he was being hanged knowing that the soldier said that if anyone tampered with there railroad that they would be hanged.
What Strange Things Have Happened
One thing that is odd in this story is that Mr. Farquhar would go to the railroad even after the guard said what would happen. Another thing that was odd was that the rope broke and he fell into the water. A third thing that was strange was that he was not shot by the guards when he emerged from the water. Another thing that was odd was that a assumed very skilled marksman missed him when he shot at him. All of the people missed dramatically and made it so that he could get away, were they helping him escape. There was no roads or anything that was there that showed human life had effected it, no roads, houses, nothing. Along with these he just runs accross a city streets sized road that didn't look traveled on at all.

After this the man finds a mansion, a man was in the mansion and he was a great hunter, he was a war captain and he had to choose a new animal with wits and reasoning, a human, the man that fell off the yacht is scared.

 Prediction 
Rains ford is witty and he know what the hunt is, with animals. But I do think that he will survive.
