Listening to music is great for you in every way. It helps increase positive emotions, improves physical and heart health and improves cognitive functions. It engages your auditory system and areas of the brain responsible for movement, language, attention, memory and emotions. Brain Harris who is a certified neurologic music therapist at a Harvard Rehabilitation Hospital says, "There is no other stimulus on earth that simultaneously engages our brains as widely as music does."

In conclusion, listening to music is great for your mind, body and soul. It is scientifically proven to show positive effects on someone's life and will improve the quality of your life in both short and long-term settings. So next time someone tells you to take out those AirPods, turn to them and explain that you simply arent "just listening to music".

1. Emotional Benefits

Listening to music helps a person with their emotions in many ways. When you listen to music it releases dopamine to the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in how we feel pleasure. When dopamine levels are high we feel happier. Sometimes when listening to music we get chills, usually because the song is meaningful to someone. This feeling triggers the release of dopamine even more! Listening to music can help relieve symptoms of depression, or just lift someone up when they're having a bad day because of this. You may be thinking that this is only the case when listening to upbeat and happy music, but you would be wrong. It is actually proven that listening to sad music can make us feel better because it gives us an emotional outlet. Most sad music also triggers nostalgia which is a complex emotion that is actually mainly positive (with a few negative feelings like sadness).

Listening to music, singing, or playing an instrument is great for the heart and body for a few reasons. It has a few small but positive effects on heart health. Listening to music, especially songs with a fast pace, typically increases the heart rate and speeds up breathing. This goes vice versa as well. When listening to slower music the heart rate calms. Studies have also found that music may help to lower blood pressure. Your body and heart move with the music like the leaves blow in the winds. Music therapy is a form of therapy that can help people recover their ability to speak or move, especially stroke survivors. Music can also cause positive changes to your cardiovascular system. A number of different studies have proven that music may increase endurance which allowed people to do better in cardiac stress testing, improve blood vessel function because music relaxes arteries, help heart rate and blood pressure levels to return to baseline levels quicker after physical exercise and help people recovering from heart surgery to feel less pain and recover better.

3. Cognitive & Brain Function

Listening to music is proven to help with cognitive brain function. Music is complex which forces your brain to fully comprehend what you are listening to, therefore listening can be a total brain workout. Otolaryngologists (neck and head doctors) at Johns Hopkins University have done many studies using functional MRIs to observe the relationship between our brains and music. During these studies, they had people listen to or play music inside the MRI machine and found that music makes the brain very active and the scans showed the majority of the brain was engaged. When listening to music your brain is doing much more than just listening, which is why so much of the cerebrum is working. Listening to music is also proven to help with learning and memory. While studying listening to music can help with memory but can also increase endurance allowing you to study longer and focus better. Different kinds of music affect people differently so finding what works for you is a process.
