Fredrick would sketch his paintings in the fields and then finish painting when he got back to his studio (smart idea). Most of his work was confined very close to his home. One of Church's most famous paintings is one of the American subjects he completed during his career.

He was so inspired by Thomas Cole's art so he spent more and more of his free time to painting landscapes and that's how he became a part of the Hudson River School. One of his best pieces was called "Progress" which had native Americans looking at the scene below them.

He was known as that period's best known artist who specialized in western scenes. He repeatedly traveled to the west to paint. Beautiful clouds and extravagant mountains take the backdrop of the painting. But the foreground includes a pastoral scene. This area is also a native american encampment which includes a smattering of teepees, herds of horses and tribal members milling out.
