An example of him acting like an adult is his attitude about innocence and feeling like he doesn't have it any more. He also acts very childish is how he spends all of his money without realizing it.

He holds onto the little details of things similar to what a child does. When he was sitting at the sandwich bar, alone he thought about his top of the line suitcase and how most people's are inexpensive. His first roommate at Pencey didnt like how Holden's suitcases were so nice. They bickered about such an unimportant detail and they switched rooms over it, a very childish thing to dislike one another about. (121-122) Yet Holden sits by himself, independent like an adult does. His actions result in him being stuck between a child and an adult.

Yet, later in the chapter on page 125 he was very opinionated about catholics and how when someone brings up the idea of where is the closest church, they are always inferring if you are catholic which makes him seem young by not excepting others opinions.

Holden's character expresses/shows that he is stuck between being a child and being an adult through his interactions with others. Holden has a love for kids; in chapter 16, Holden meets a girl in central park while looking for his sister. He is able to interact easily and have conversation, while with other adults, Holden often finds himself arguing, judging, or unable to withstand normal communication. Holden's admiration for children also re appears when he sees the boy walking on the side of the road singing "when a body catch a body coming through the rye". These pieces of information support the fact that Holden is stuck between being an adult and being a child, because he admires the nature of young children, possibly how honest and direct they are, based on the people he has interacts with throughout his lifetime. Even though Holden is not a child, flirts with older women and tries to but himself drinks, a piece of him still admires childhood and youth, making him ambivilant between growing up and entering adulthood and responsibilites, or staying child-like and being care free. This situation may have resulted in the fact that Holden possibly feels that he did not recieve a childhood in his lifetime, so he is not ready to move on from something he never had, into the next part of his life.

Holden wants to be pure like the children are but he also want to be able to/ allowed to do all the things adults do. Holden admires how the boy was teetering on the edge of safety and danger and didn't even care. "He was just singing for the hell of it, you could tell"(128). "'What we could do is drive up to Massachusetts or Vermont, and all around there, see... We'll stay in these cabins and stuff like that till the dough runs out...
