Well, in that film, we recall a number of people giving their recollections about school from the early twentieth century. There were quite a lot of different perspectives. Many of them mention the classes being run by teachers who were strict, who incorporated corporal punishment, which we don't see, though teachers still have a role with a punitive element. Classes where attendance wasn't too strict when the community had other needs, like harvest season, which as discussed continues in the summer vacation we see today. The curricula of those days continues to develop unto these days.
