Lamb Finishing System

The lamb finishing system that I think works well, is outdoor finishing, this type of system is a pasture-based and mixed swards diets, such as red and white clover and chicory. A pasture and mixed swards diet mean that the live weight gain of the lambs can range from 100g - 600g, this diet is cheaper and also improves the lamb mineral and trace levels. However, there are some considerations to take into place one of these are that there is a risk of bloat on the clover, and having rich sward management will be important, another one is that chicory requires making sure you are using careful grazing management and must take care as to avoid damage to the crown when overgrazing in the fall/winter season, and finally unlike clover chicory will require fertiliser.

Beef Cattle Finishing System

The finishing system I have chosen for beef cattle are finishing heavy stores, this is where cattle are purchased and put through every 2-3 months, it means that purchasing in opportunistic and experience will need to be required when recognising cattle that have enough profit potential and feeding cattle waste and by-product feed is a good use, as it means you are getting good value feeds that are based on relative values. This system makes a good potential profit, however, this system does have a problem with the risk of disease, as these cattle will be sourced from many kinds of markets and farms, having a health plan is essential, with heavy stores as you need to keep a regular monitoring on growth rates as it is required so stock can be sold off as soon as they are showing signs of reduced growth and efficiency.

Local Butcher Market

Within marketing off lamb and beef, another place that you can take these animals are off to the local butcher, advantages of selling directly to farmers are that they build better relationships and partnerships between the farmer and the butcher, during a phone interview conducted on 14th February 2022, Martin from Kitson's butchers North Yorkshire stated that " it brings less stress for the animal, it's a fair and guaranteed price, the butcher can guarantee a sale, time-efficient", where during another a phone interview conducted on 12th February 2022, Mr. J Thompson from Thompson's butchers North Yorkshire stated that " the butcher knows what he is getting, knowing where it is from and also what diet the animal is on too". The disadvantage of this is that there may be no local abattoir, so the meat would have to travel, also having to deal with the price of hauling and slaughter costs if they don't have an abattoir, finally, if farmers give them the full cattle, then the butcher has to sell every piece of meat to get a profit.

Pros and Cons of LiveWeight Gain (LWG)

Liveweight gain is where you take your stock to markets and auctions to then be slaughtered or sold on to others to use for meat production. However there are pros and cons of liveweight gain, these pros include that if you aren't able to make a profit from these animals then it means that you can take the stock home until the market prices increase or get a better meaning that you will have a better chance of selling for a higher profit, another advantage is that all grades are accepted so that means that you don't have to work towards a set target like you have to if you are on a contract. On the other hand, you have your disadvantages which include having to keep up with keeping costs, hauling them to market, and having to pay an entry fee to place them into the market.

Pros and Cons of DeadWeight Gain (DWG)

Deadweight gain is where you take your stock straight to the abattoir and this is usually on a contract. However, there are pros and cons of deadweight gain, these cons include that you must match the abattoirs requirements, you will have to focus on the quality of the stock, and they have to be selected at the right time, these mean that you will need to keep them longer and keep up with costs. On the other hand, the pros include that you can place larger groups of stock and send them on to the abattoir, you can focus on breeding sires to improve meat quality and fats, another pro is that there is business security, stable marketing and is reliable.

Meat Boxes

Within selling direct to consumers some farmers have opted to make a business in selling meat boxes to consumers that come directly from the farm. There are pros and cons to this, the cons to meat boxes include that they may be more expensive than meats at a butcher's shop or grocery store. However, the pros are that it offers high-quality meats, you can buy these boxes in several sizes and they use eco-friendly packaging. Even, though this would make a good profit, some single meat boxes don't always get sold, so offering consumers a mixed meat box would be better as you are offering more for a better price.

Outdoor finishing for lambs allows dormers to improve the diet of lambs for meat, with this it improves the minerals and vitamins, so when it comes to finishing lambs are able to to have a steady weight gain when it is time to sell or go straight to slaughter. Heavy stores for cattle is a good profitable business, that allows farmers to build up the growth rates and also allows others to have an eye for good weight gain, this means that when it is time for slaughter or to sell on to others, they have a good sire and weight gain.
