The Great American Dust Bowl by Don Brown

In this story the theme of consequence is observed on a much larger scale. While farmers in the early 1900's used bad farming techniques without much thought of the long term effects, the soil began to dry up and lose its nutrients. This resulted in decades of drought and dust storms that rendered much of the American plains nearly unlivable. Don Brown is showing that consequences can arise unexpectedly and can be a big problem for adults as well as children. He is also showing how bigger bad decisions can lead to bigger consequences, with the dust bowl lasting as long as it did and covering so much area. With this story Don is warning children to consider all of the factors before doing something because you never know how bad it can get until it's already too late.

This is Not My Hat by John Klassen

Consequence is observed in this story as a little fish steals a bigger fishes hat and tries to hide. The bigger fish finds the little fish and retrieves his hat in what we, as the reader, can only assume is through violent means. John Klassen is showing that stealing is wrong, even if you think you might get away with it, because there can always have social implications, such as being beat up or not being liked. He is showing that while many people may have thoughts of doing something bad, they have to realize that they are just a small part of society. When someone does something without thinking about how it affects all of the people involved, it can result in unpleasant consequences.

A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon

In this story David Shannon was attempting to show how there can be consequences by trying to conform to social norms. While Camilla loved to eat lima beans, she refused to do so when she learned that all of her classmates hated lima beans. She wanted to fit in so she pretended to be someone she's not in order to do so. But by doing so she ended up being so negatively affected by it that she stood out from her classmates, which was the opposite of what she wanted. David Shannon is showing that by changing yourself to conform to what other people want you to be, you can cause more harm to yourself than good. Children should be themselves and not feel a need to fit in.

No David! by David Shannon

Consequence, while at times unpleasant, can teach children to learn by allowing them to figure out that some actions may seem alright but will actually leave you worse off in the end. David Shannon illustrated this point beautifully with David, the rambunctious young boy who doesn't listen to his mother. Against her wishes David continues doing whatever he wants until he accidently breaks a vase while playing ball inside the house. David's mother is then forced to put David in timeout which makes him very sad. When David is behaving badly and ignoring his mother's request to stop she initially tolerates his behavior. David Shannon is showing that parents should tolerate this behavior to a point because it is good to let children figure things out on their own. Punishment is only given once there is irreversible damage done and it must be given in order for David to learn from his mistakes.
