Good Afternoon! As many of you know I'm Daniel Webster. I’m from the northern state of Massachusetts. I served for secretary of state. I was also a representative for Massachusetts. This makes me know what people want from my state and have more knowledge. My stad on tariffs is I think it’s a positive thing. It's positive because in the north they need manufacturing. Also by having tariffs it extends the economy. I want to end slavery in the north but to keep slavery in the South. He wanted to keep it in the South because that’s how they made a lot of money. Slavey in the south was probably not gonna go away because it was a huge money maker. This is my stad in tariffs and slavey.

Good afternoon fellow senators, as you may know my name is John C. Calhoun from South Carolina with the southern interests and I believe slavery should grow. I used to be in the House and had a military success as a war hawk. Secretary of the treasury A. J. Dallas called me the young Hercules who carried the war on his shoulders. President James Monroe appointed me his secretary of war. For two terms, I managed being the secretary of war by improving the administration of the military, favoring the establishment of a standing army, and advocating the building of a navy composed primarily of steam frigates. My extreme nationalism urged me to support the Tariff of 1816, a new national bank, and the use of federal funds for internal improvements. This affected the south economically. I argued that slaves were property and that since the newly acquired territories were the common property of all the states, the federal government could not legally exclude slavery from such territories. In the end I think that the country is headed to be more like the North and we can’t have that.

Hello, as I am sure you know, I am John C. Calhoun. I represent South Carolina and the southern states. I have served in the House of Representatives and I am currently the Secretary of War. I am here to address the issues of slavery and tariffs. First I will discuss tariffs. I believe that we should get rid of all tariffs. It only makes me and my fellow southerners pay more for goods while the northerners get to enjoy all the benefits. Why should the northern states get to prosper while the southern states suffer? This is an unfair system and it must be abolished! Next I would like to discuss the issue of slavery. Slavery must be allowed to spread and continue. It is a great thing and it allows us to grow and prosper. After all, the north has factories and businesses to make money, and the south needs to farm to keep up with them. And how could we do that without slaves. The north only wants to get rid of slavery to destroy our economy and come out as the dominant section of our country. Moreover, it doesn’t do any harm to the north, it just helps the south. Have a good afternoon and thank you for listening.

As many of you know, I am Daniel Webster of the Northern state of Massachusetts. I have been serving in congress since 1812, only failing to be re-elected in 1818. I also have a successful law career since 1807 and have been speaking out about issues I am passionate about my entire life, such as the War of 1812 and the Embargo Act. I am here to discuss some suggestions I have concerning the issues of tariffs and slavery that will most certainly benefit our growing nation. First, I believe that we should have a 30% tariff on British goods. If we tax these goods, American manufacturers will be able to compete with the British, even though they are ahead of us. This will greatly benefit the American economy and may even allow the Americans to catch up to the British manufacturers faster, as factories will have more money to take more risks and buy the newer machines. Secondly, we must stop the spread of slavery. I would prefer to abolish slavery, but doing so would decimate the Southern economy. Unpaid labor is inhumane, even for people you may consider inferior to yourself. Many slaves are forced to work from dusk to dawn in the scorching heat on plantations. While John C. Calhoun may tell you that the evils of slavery have been blown out of proportion, Nat Turner, Denmark Vessey, and Gabriel Prosser clearly disagreed, as they gambled and lost their lives on a rebellion against slavery. If we follow my guidance, we will certainly be able to maintain our large nation.

I stand here as your Massachusetts representative, and before us are the blazing affairs of proper tariffs and fair slavery dividing the Country. Tariffs are the backbone of our American economy, creating more incentive for our citizens to purchase our own products. After the establishment of our own Nation, tariffs will extend the economy and permit us to compete with other great foreign powers. Elaborating on foreign negotiations, tariffs will authorize us to go into unchartered territory, bigger, greater foreign policies. Concerning slavery, the truth is clear, slavery is an inhumane practice that causes revolts, though It’s a lost cause to try and abolish slavery in the South. Slavery is what the Southern economy is based on. Therefore, abolishing it would destroy their economy. Thus, this great nation’s economy will expand greatly from tariffs, yet we must stay committed to our morals of humane treatment of citizens, to comprise a great republic.

Good afternoon my fellow congressman. I am Henry Clay, and I am a republican and speaker of the house. I come from Kentucky, and I represent the West. Today we will be discussing the Missouri Compromise. In 1819, Missouri asked to become an official state, but they wanted to be a slave state. If we were to simply say yes, there would be an uneven amount of slave and free states, 11-12, which could cause many problems. I propose that Maine enters the nation as a free state, that way Missouri can enter as a slave state. Then the Senate would keep even balance-12 slave states and 12 free states. With the Missouri Compromise, everyone wins, the North gets a restricted spread of slavery and the power of the South, the West gets to join the Union, and the South gains a slave state and will be able to protect the institution of slavery for the time being. The Missouri compromise will also address the question of slavery in the rest of the Louisiana territory. The Compromise will draw an imaginary line, that is just west of the southern boundary of Missouri, at 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude to be exact. Slavery will not be permitted north of the line but allowed south of it. We should also have higher tariffs, it could be 20-30%. Tariffs are taxes on imported goods, and they will help to improve our economy here in America. With the money that the government would collect, we could build more roads, canals, bridges, and other structures that would make transporting goods much easier. There will also be more factories making goods that can be sold. These things will encourage trade because it will be a lot easier to travel with supplies, and therefore everyone could gain more money. Even if this compromise is only temporary, it has given us a solution, and a stable one at that. We must do everything in our power to ensure that this country stays united. I hope you take my plan into consideration. Thank you for listening to me.
