Throughout the text it talks about how the dust bowl in the 1930's changed lives and made people leave their homes and jobs to find better work to provide for their family. These migrants were referred to as "Okies" since they were mostly from Oklahoma. Others came from Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri.

These young men are leaving their home, seeking jobs to reclaim their lives after the devastation of the dust bowl. A lot of these men needed to work at farms just to get by after losing everything.

Many refugees immigrated to California for the better opportunities and the better climate. These people were probably a part of the recreational activities that would go on. Sometimes even singing or dancing just to try to cheer up the mood after all that they have lost.

In the working community many people immigrated to California but sooner than later they found that the more populated the area became the wages became so low even with the entire family working. Many people set up camps with poor sanitation and were getting sick and became a health problem. That wasn't the only problem for the people who immigrated to California, with trying to live a stable life with low wages they had to be on top of their job to get a stable income.
