I think that Olive is a shy kid who has trouble fitting in. According to the book, her family has moved many times and each time she has had to start a new school. She has a lot of trouble finding new friends.

Olive is brave and interested in all of the paintings. She made friends with this kid who got trapped by Aldous McMartin and his name is Morton and he is really supposed to be around 80 years old and he is stuck 9 years old forever.
