Atwood explores the theme of sacrifice through the quote "I believe in the resistance as I believe there can be no light without shadow;or rather, no shadow unless there is also light". This quote is implying that in order for people to live in joy with happiness someone has to bear the pain and live in sadness. This is shown through the Handmaid's as in order for the Wives and Commanders to be happy the Handmaid's must sacrifice their bodies in order to provide a child for those who hold greater power. This enables us as the readers to understand that those in power will undermine those below them to ensure that they are the only beneficiary. This relates to a Marxist theory as the elite thrive off of the lower classes sufferings.

Quote : "There is more than one kind of freedom ... Freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don't underrate it."
This quote represents the society before the handmaid’s lived it is one, that is filled with freedom because there no set rules and limits.
Aunt lydia says this while thinking about how life was like before Gilead becomes what they know what they now know as life. The society once had freedom before because there are no set rules or limits

An example of this in Gilead is that women can no longer wear what they want, have their own money, and do whatever they wish.
so in todays society, women now have the right to express their desires. In today's society and us readers believe that females have the "freedom to" to do whatever we desire instead of receiving our "freedom from". An example shown of this is Jacinda Arden a female prime minster of New Zealand

The lack of freedom is expressed through Atwood’s quote “Maybe the life I think I'm living is a paranoid delusion...Sanity is a valuable possession; I hoard it the way people once hoarded money. I save it, so I will have enough, when the time comes.” This quote connects to society as some have experienced and tested their limits of sanity through health problems. A recurring problem such as depression makes an individual's perception of sanity more valuable as it shows how easy the possession of sanity can be overtaken. I believe this quote expresses the theme of how sanity can be manipulated and shows it well in the handmaid’s tale.

Better doesn't always mean better for everyone.

Theme: Women Suffrage

the advancement of one groups rights will often come at the detriment of another group which is something that June realizes and accepts

Margerot Atwood uses the theme of womens oppresion displayed through the lens of womens suffrage. This is illustrated through the fact that women are constantly being denied rights, ie used by males in this society who are deemed as superior. "Better does not mean better for everyone". This quote works to highlight, for the reader, the advancements of feminism in this novel. This is mirrored in todays world where women are still needing to fight for their basic freedoms like equal pay.

Quote: "I feel like the word shatter"
In the novel, ‘The handmaid’s tale’, written by Margaret Atwood, the quote, “I feel like the word shatter”, reflects the theme of ‘Loss of identity’ because Offred feels as if she has been stripped of her identity due to the restrictions at Gilead. This relates to the wider world because some women still struggle to fight for their rights and power for equality. This allows the readers to believe that men can still be the superior in this world even when there have been some changes already, like the right for women to vote in New Zealand. The identity of women has been manipulated and taken advantage of in our world because of the little say that women have compared to men. We believe that no matter how hard everyone tries to be equal there will always be one gender that is more dominant than the other.

Atwood explores the theme of 'Self Dominance' through the quote "I am not your justification for existence." This is shown in the Handmaid's Tale where Atwood refers to Offred's mother and her resistance to the opposite sex where she lives for herself and not for the opposite gender. Atwood encourages the readers to resist against the oppression within the Dystopian society as thoughts of personal expressions and individuality are being being deprived from citizens alone. Such quote speaks of Hope, allowing readers to adapt to the fact that we do not exist for the creation of others but for the evolution of ourselves.
