Famous Stoics

Many popular leaders of history like Michel de Montaigne, King Frederick the Great, Adam Smith, English political thinker John Stuart Mill and, most famously, George Washington, were known as stoics, leading their lives in this philosophy. It makes sense that a president, mainly the first president of a new country, have an organized life with minimal distractions. Stoics are known to be pragmatic, intent on efficiency, and making the right actions at the right time, not dwelling too much on the past. These can all be leadership qualities that have an impact on these historical figures' lives. Having a lifestyle like such can be mind-clearing and mind-opening for people like these leaders who have to deal with large territories. Especially the first president of the United States. Having that sort of stability in their life probably kept it organized and kept the president level-headed for his responsibilities. Being a stoic could definitely have been beneficial for his lifestyle.

Stoicism is a philosophy, something that you adopt into your lives to be a better person. The philosophy of stoicism is there as a sort of framework. A framework that provides counsel in the lives that follow the philosophy. It introduces a set of rules that followers can abide by, some reasons to follow to better yourself based on those beliefs. A purpose, in other words. The philosophy supports learning from others as much as you can and using that wisdom to figure out what you have to offer. Those guidelines throw a different spin on followers’ mindsets, encouraging them to look a different way, or at a different angle, perceiving things and deciphering their importance. This stability provides an organized view on life. Philosophy is something that people will adopt to focus on becoming a better person. Stoicism, to the followers of this philosophy, are swayed by that very thought.

Exercising Beliefs

Stoicism is about having a certain layout of rules or something like that to regulate the followers' of Stoicism philosophy views on life. It is about tending to those rules and regulations and exercising them throughout their life. Kind of like the person in this GIF, who is literally exercising with the beliefs contained in the philosophy of Stoicism. Although followers would more likely apply the rules of practical realism, acting only with purpose, emotional self-management, and ration mindsets to their everyday life. The GIF is a representation of this philosophy which works quite well. In the depiction, the person is lifting weights with books that contain rules of this philosophy on either side. One is Meditations by Marcus Arelius, something we read in class. The background seems to be set in an ancient time where the idea of Stoicism probably originated, seeing that Marcus Alerlius was the emperor of ancient Rome.

Stone Faced

The philosophy of Stoicism is often seen as being stone-faced. That is what comes to mind first and foremost when thinking about this philosophy, but I think it is definitely deeper that it seems. Stoicism is more than a personality of a person who thinks and acts in a stoic manner, stereotypically emotionless, incapable of feelings, or black-hearted as some might assume. I think it is important to remember that Stoicism is a way of life. That people choose this as their point of view. The life of Stoics may be difficult to uphold. They think that emotions that are run unchecked need to be put in order. Fretting and other emotions can be better dealt with if they are stifled since self-discipline is big when it comes to this way of life. Followers of this philosophy may not let themselves show feelings like fear, sadness or sometimes even happiness. Perhaps they feel it, but they have a tight grasp, a tight control on them, making them seem that stone-faced type of person.

Stoic Passions

According to this diagram, Stoics view their emotional priorities a bit differently from those who don't follow the philosophy. In the diagram, feelings like pain, fear, craving, or pleasure are something that are seen as unhealthy passions. The lifestyles of stoics consist of avoiding things that may cause pain, viewing fear as something irrational, probably meaning to face it head-on. They do not give in to cravings, trying to avoid striving toward something they are attracted to. And pleasure, finally, something that is irrational to choose and feel. Instead, they choose caution over anything they view could be potentially harmful. Instead of craving, they think in a wishing manner. They desire virtue. And finally, they allow themselves joy, which is different than pleasure, in the eyes of stoics. These are some virtues or rules that Stoics follow in their everyday lives. Their choices and beliefs are swayed by these philosophical rules.

The Cardinal Virtues

There are four virtues in the philosophy of Stoicism that followers believe influence their lifestyles. These virtues include Wisdom, Courage, Justice, and Temperance. The virtue of Wisdom include knowing the difference and being able to decipher between virtue and vice. Choosing laziness and greed over knowing better would not be an act of wisdom. For Courage, Stoics don't completely suppress the feeling of fear or anxiety, but learn to deal around those feelings. They use what they know to act indifferent, in the face of fear. Being a Stoic is about controlling those unchecked emotions and being able to overcome them. Justice in Stoicism is the morality behind their actions, relating to the community, the society, and the people around them. They do what is good for the community at all times. Finally, Temperance which has to do with self-discipline and control. They further themselves from negative things. These are the four virtues that affect the lives of Stoics.

The philosophy of Stoicism has been around for an incredibly long time. From the ancient Greek times to be specific and probably even longer. They everyday lives of Stoics are very strict and tightly bound to a schedule. For example, waking up first thing, Stoics do not allow themselves to sleep any additional minutes or press the snooze button on their alarm. For eating, they are intent on eating inexpensive but healthy food options for every meal. They do activities like walking outside, and other mind clearing things. They behold the thought of not letting anything negative bring them down. When things do not go their way, they try to right it instead of expressing their negative emotions. They do not waste any time throughout their day, trying to be as productive as possible. Everyday, they will deal with all types of people, annoying or irritating. They train themselves to not lose their cool these types of people. Even though they are strict about keeping their feelings tight, they still allow themselves to feel positive and healthy emotions as part of their daily routine.
