LinkedIn is a platform I frequently use. I chose this platform because it’s professional and tends to have more tempered content. It can be a great way to discover professional development opportunities and connect with thought leaders. The biggest drawback is that it can be neglected unless users are actively networking or pursuing a development opportunity. I’m always happy to connect on this platform. My profile is linked below.

Pros:
- I find a lot of professional development opportunities through LinkedIn.
- I recently celebrated passing my PMP exam. About 50 of my connections posted nice comments about this achievement. It was a great way to re-engage with my network about professional development goals.
- This can encourage the workforce to discuss and pursue certifications or development opportunities.
- It’s an accessible way to follow industry and thought leaders.

Cons:
- It’s not the most popular platform.
- It can be neglected unless you’re actively networking for a new opportunity.

I am an avid Instagram (IG) user. I enjoy following educational accounts like Smithsonian 3D (linked below even though the preview says error), Go Clean Co, Ellevest, The Gottman Institute, the National Archives, the National Park Service, and many others. I chose this platform because it’s a visually engaging tool to start a conversation.

Pros:
- Gorgeous photos or eye-catching graphics can easily engage a user.
- Similar to Twitter, short captions work best. This forces the author to be specific and concise with information.
- IG is a good way to start conversations and introduce ideas.
- You can ask questions through the “stories” feature. Good accounts will ask a question or take a poll, and then add more content to their stories to actively engage their audience.

Cons:
- TikTok seems more popular than IG with younger audiences.
- You can’t click on the photo or a link in the caption for more information. Users have to “Swipe Up” on stories or go back to the account home page for a link in the bio. It’s an extra step that may discourage participation.

I am not a Reddit user, but I am aware of the platform because of the GameStop trading threads. This seems to be a popular wiki platform. I chose this platform because of the volume of accessible topics. I was actually shocked to find a thread on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). This is an emerging topic that we’re focusing on with our L&D team. Any information or tips could be useful, so it was exciting to find unfiltered threads discussing the topic. Sometimes, workforce surveys don’t always provide great results, which impacts the quality of the final learning deliverable.

Pros:
- You can connect with anyone on thousands of topics.
- Users are able to upvote comments they think are important.

Cons:
- Information may not be credible.
- Personally, I really dislike the user experience (UX) of this platform. It seems really dated (like an AOL chat room).

Zappar

I came across this platform last summer during an industry event. Zappar is an AR app that allows developers to design content and assign it to a QR code. The example from the seminar was a picture of a personal trainer at a gym. When you scanned the photo, their bio appeared and users could determine which personal trainer best aligned with their goals. I chose this platform because I haven’t had time to explore it and think there could be a lot of possibilities for L&D.

Pros:
This app could be an asset to my L&D team during our Onboarding Seminar (OBS) program for new hires. This link shows Zappar hotspots during a tour. This could be a great way to increase social presence with our new hire cohorts.

Cons:
- Not everyone has a smart phone, so it could limit accessibility.
- In my workplace, it would have limited use because of classified environments and policies about personal devices.
- It appears that their team of developers would have to create and edit the learning experience, so it could be cost-prohibitive not to be able to do that with my L&D team.

This platform is particularly popular at the moment for short videos. I chose it because I don’t use the platform and wanted to learn more about it. It does have a lot of potential as a learning tool. While I’m not in a K-12 setting, I have watched TikTok videos about finance on Instagram. During my research, I discovered that I really like this platform, but get easily distracted by the volume of content.

Pros
- It’s free
- It’s designed to be mobile first
- There are endless possibilities

Cons
- It’s easy to get distracted and off track
- Privacy seems to be an ongoing concern with this platform
