One of my favorite books in recent memory, Red helps contextualize what it feels like for children struggling with their gender identity. It does this is a way that allows other children to empathize with them and see the value of not only knowing who you are but models talking about feelings. This would be great for any K-2 class working on emotions.

A wonderful captivating graphic novel that helps children understand and relate to deaf individuals. This can be used to explore a nontraditional writing style, as well as deaf specific vocabulary (in reference to the phonic ear). The other aspect of this graphic novel I enjoy is that it has several layers to it, that can be used in any class from 3-12th grade.

Brian deals with the struggles of fitting in and feelingly lonely or as he sees it invisible. It's not until someone takes the time to interact with him that things change for him and we see the impact being inclusive has on others. This is a great book for modeling healthy peer relationships and discussing ways to be inclusive. A good resource for a 1-3 grade classroom.

This novel is a great way to address hard concepts with a class like death and how to treat people and animals in a humane way. Ivan is a relatable character with several levels of depth available depending on your class. With several levels of humor folded by a silver-back gorilla, and his friends at the strip mall. This book is appropriate for a read aloud for children 3-5th grade and independent reading for 6-8th.

A good example of the creative process. The book shows how "mistakes" can be added to and expanded upon until they create something we like. I would use this when discussing ways to persevere or when addressing obstacles related to English in a 1-3 grade class. The vocabulary is simple, but the lesson can apply to older elementary students.
