Before I transferred to Kang Chiao, I had barely learned anything about English writing. Because we were required to write narrative essays rather than academic ones in the past exams. Moreover, the grading criteria will only focus on whether you use correct grammar and tense and whether the words are spelled correctly. I have been exposed to the subject of essential academic skills since grade 10. During this class, I learned how to correctly cite work that is not my own, how to distinguish between various types of sources and choose the most reliable ones, how to write an argument, and how to make your article look well-structured. In general, I gradually gained more knowledge and a deeper understanding of academic writing.

"Inventing the Randomized Double-Blind Trial: The Nuremberg Salt Test of 1835" is an article written by Michael Stolberg, which mainly discusses the ethical issues surrounding the use of deception in homeopathy treatment by using double-blind and randomization trials. In 1834, homeopathy became popular, yet remains controversial. Von Hoven, the city's highest-ranking public health official and head of the local hospitals, objected to this concept. In 1835, homeopath physician Reuter challenged Von Hoven. Von Hoven thereby conducted a double-blind experiment with 120 citizens interested in this topic, 54 of whom were willing to participate. In the study, 100 bottles of vials were randomly allocated into two groups, one with distilled snow water, and the other with salt in C30-dilution of distilled snow water. Three weeks later, 50 responses were collected on whether there was any unwell feeling. The result justified Reuter was wrong. It was believed that symptoms or changes in drug effects are caused by the fruit of imagination, self-deception, and preconceived opinion.

What do I read?

At school, I usually read many academic articles and also news in order to complete my homework. However, at home, I prefer reading novels, especially suspense ones for entertainment.

How do I read?

Since I love reading suspense novels, it was important for me to take notes while reading so I could deduce the correct culprit.

Last week, we took the EAS exam, which tested our summary writing skills. The above I will do a reflection for the March monthly summative based on the assessment criteria. For the organization part, my conclusion is weak and over-simplified, since I did not manage the word count well, the summary exceeded the prescribed number of five words, resulting in my conclusion not being fully expressed. What's more, for the content part, I did use some descriptive language, however failed to include some important details to support the main ideas. For the elaborate part, my vocabulary use is uneven and somewhat ineffective for the audience and purpose. Moreover, for the grammar and mechanics part, many errors appeared in my summary, such as not using the correct tense which is inconsistent. Additionally, I didn't cite a correct in-text citation for my summary. To sum up, I did do well in the format part, but still have many other areas to improve.

The main idea of the quotation is that poverty leads to crime, which suggests that individuals in poverty may use illegal activities as a means to survive or improve their circumstances.
I do not agree with this main idea, because it is oversimplified. Poverty alone does not cause crime, but it can be a contributing factor by creating conditions of desperation that may increase crime. However, many determined poor people do not turn to crime even in difficult status. They often change the situation through other legal means.
