Margherita
I user video only during my personal mentoring period, because it was important to have documents about my work. I never shared student's imagines , because it is not possibile for their privacy. I also use video if my students want to realize it or if I ask them to take it. In different situations I prefer not to use video during my lessons . It is not necessary in my opinion.

I use video camera to record students performances when learning a foreign language. They love it and they behave better and work harder because they know they are being observed and people can see what they do. At the beginning, I feel it's a little bit different and special because you are not used to be recorded and watched by others. But then, it is part of the routine and you get easily involved

I was never recorded while I was a mentee. That was too long ago... I have never recorded mentees because years ago, when I was working as a mentor this was not common practice. However, I think it would be perfect because I use it now with students to see and show them how they present their works and the feedback is great. at first they may feel a bit uncomfortable, but then they realize it's the right path for improvement. With mentees it would be the same. Apart from being evidence for your comments, it's also effective because people can analyse their posture, the way they speak, how they use crutch words, how they address students, how they react and how the students react. If people are ready for that self-analysis, I think it can be a great tool for self-evaluation and self-development.

Technology has changed the way humans relate to the world. In shopping, leisure, social relations, work, everything is unthinkably done a few years ago, and changes do not stop happening. All these changes also transformed the way knowledge is acquired: in person, at a distance, in printed or virtual material, videoconferencing, with educational objects, academic websites, search sites, etc. Although the school institution is slow to incorporate change, the technology available today has considerably changed the way research is done.
Mentoring a group of mentors who are members of the same research group involves a large number of hours on the part of the mentor. The amount of information to be managed is too large. If the advisor uses only the email tool as a support element of his or her guidance, he / she runs the risk of getting lost in the huge set of messages he receives. The virtual orientation room allows you to store a 'memory' of previous orientations and to organize collective materials that will serve as the basis for all orientations. With each ticket of a new mentor he can find in the room this memory available for consultation and can take advantage of the experience of other colleagues. The different forums allow you to organize traditional guidance-related information and serve as a repository for any reports you may need to make. There is an investment of time when creating the room, selecting and organizing the materials. However, the result of using this strategy may show compensating results and a lot of time saving for updating and integrating the new students.
This kind of activity I only did on eTwinning projects and really proved to be quite beneficial. We will always be able to consult, see the shortcomings as well as the advantages and the good with which it resulted.

The aims of this kind of documentation are different, but I think that the issues raised in Rachel Lofthouse speech about the use of videos in mentoring relationship are not so different. School kids or mentees, after all, are all students in someway. Before the recording you have to decide whether, when and what to record, during the recording you must ensure that the process had a weak impact on dynamics of behaviors of the class, and finally after the recording you have to share the results with the learner and analyse them.

However, despite being really helpful due to the amount of details and information that we can get from it. It is also a controversial issue as not everybody likes being recorded and also, because it makes them feel more nervous than usual as they know that every sigle action is going to be taken into account. Nevertheless, while working with students, in my school, we are starting to use it as a way of letting students be aware of their performances while speaking in the target language. We tell them that it is a part of the evaluation process. Though we are implementing this, we should be cautious as you know, asking for parents' allowance beforehand and so on.

Technology has evolved fast and nowadays we use it 24/7 for everything in our daily routines: for online shopping, entertainment (be movies, music or gaming), social networks, and obviously for learning and teaching, too. I’ve been using technology with Internet access for a long time in spite of not being very well accepted by some schools. I use my students’ handheld gadgets for video recording of their surroundings, for photography and audio. However, I’ve rarely recorded the students in activities and as I’ve never been a mentor, I’ve never use it for mentoring. I truly believe in its benefits for detail, for later analysis and improvement of methodologies though some parents (and students) wouldn’t react well if I contacted them for recurrent recordings. In fact, there is strict legislation now in Portugal concerning the recording of minors in educational settings and that’s why I only take photos from the back of the classroom, from where no one can easily be identified. Another downside, both with extrovert and introvert pupils, their attitudes could be exacerbated when being recorded.

Even though video and audio recording activities for eTwinning projects have proved to be highly rewarding and are particularly beneficial in foreign language teaching and learning contacts, the truth is that I’m really careful about sharing these files – which would certainly be the case if I ever mentored using video recordings.

In my experience I have never been recorded but during my year of fresh permanent teacher my mentor took some photos during her observation while I was teaching. I have learnt A LOT observing those few photos; I have learnt that my posture wasn't as good as I had thought it was. It was a revelation at the time and I still remember how positive was that moment for me. For this reason I would appraise a lot having lessons recorded. In Italy moreover it would be quite difficult to record students because firstly the school should ask the consent to the parents ( and some of them could not accept for their children to be part of the observation ) and then the guide lines provided by the GDPR should be respected.

I have never used video recording of my own classes or others. But I think it is a great idea, Video is a powerful tool for teachers reflection, to analyse my classes and to reflect on my own teaching.
We all make mistakes and this can turn mistakes into a better teacher practice.
Beside that, it is a perfect tool to discuss with the mentee the lesson and improve their self-evaluation.

I have used video in the class just a couple of times. As it is not part of the routine it was like a fun or exciting thing to do. I found it very useful to record my students and later make them aware of their mastery of the English language. It helps them identify aspects they may not be aware otherwise.

Although I have never used video recording for mentoring, it is not the first time that I recorded sessions of myself teaching for self reflection purposes. It is incredible how much learned from observing myself performing in class. Moments where I should have given more attention to a learner, moments where it was obvious I was pressed for time so I rushed through the topic and much more. So, I believe it will be very beneficial when it comes to mentoring, both for myself as a mentor and also for the mentee.

Hello, everyone. I've never been videoed, so can't answer about actual feelings of the mentee in such a situation. However, after watching Rachel's video I've really seen a lot of pros in this activity and will definitely try it for myself, even without having a mentor.

I have never been videod while observed, so I do not know what impact it has. However, I believe there are pros and cons for this. Pros: everything is recorded so the mentee has recorded feedback. And of course the other pro is better students' behaviour. Con might be that the mentee might not feel comfortable knowing they are being recorded.

I wanted my students to record my lesson several times in order to see myself because I sometimes lose my voice control and speak very loudly, which is really disturbing for my students. As I watched my videos I saw that some of my students closed their ears with their hands. When I watched my videos I really felt sorry for my students and decided to improve my weakness and use quiter voice. And also by watching my own videos I realized that I had used ‘’come on’’ continuously. Videos can help us to criticise ourselves objectively.

I have used video recording to demonstrate and explain to mentees certain behaviors of pupils during class hours. From several recordings, I made a montage with the most relevant moments that I used to discuss the problem with my mentees.

It is a technology that most schools do not yet have, especially in primary education.

I think that using a camera in the classroom would be a great tool.

It was 33 years ago that I first had the opportunity to take advantage of video recording to improve my teaching skills and see myself as I had never done it before. I had just finished university and had a feeling I was not prepared to teach, however, I was a teacher. I needed more tools, I needed to be able to manage a classroom full of students being only 22. I wanted to be ready. I went to London and enrolled in a teacher training course. Boy it was hard!!! They surely prepared you for your imminent future, they put you right there in the middle of the worst scenario you could imagine, but I wouldn´t be here if it hadn´t been for that training course.

My students came all from different backgrounds, countries, societies, cultures and had different languages. The effort you had to make to reach them was tremendous. Still, they would record you at the end of each week to see how little by little you were improving. While a teacher would be present in the class just observing you and taking notes, she would share with you later. The notes were supported by the video! You could see right away all your mistakes, you would understand immediately your drawbacks, your deficiencies and also appreciate what you were good at! Because everything was recorded, you could see yourself as if you were somebody else, at the beginning you wouldn’t even recognize yourself in the video, your voice was different, the way you addressed your students … all needed to be changed at one point or another.

I was very young, unexperienced, the setting was difficult, but I LEARNT how to teach , I still remember what they told me, I still remember their different pieces of advice they gave me then as if they were carved in my brain. Up to today, I still see myself doing some of the things they told me I shouldn’t do, but I might do them, and then immediately as if we were talking about Pavlov´s dog , their teachings, the video recordings come to my mind. I am still aware of what I should be doing and what I shouldn´t.

I have never used video recording when mentoring, I find it more complicated in a real setting, and I do not know why I have never thought about it, but I really believe it is worth trying and I am planning on doing it soon. I just hope my mentee does not get as anxious about it as I did. My German mentee and myself have a very different relationship from the one I had with the teacher who would write everything I did wrong and told me later. I had no relationship with her. My situation now is different and more relaxed I think.

I usually video record my students and I think the insight they get from these recordings benefit them and help them to understand better what their performance is and what they should do to improve.

To this day the idea of making a vídeo of a lesson remains an issue. Having said this, while there has never been any recording made for mentoring purposes, I can understand the undeniable value of the video as a tool for reflection and discussion. The fact that a lesson can be replayed brings along the possibility of a very detailed analysis of the the different moments in a lesson , as well as the realisation of aspects to be reformulated and even maintained for a future lesson. I would go on to suggest that the use of the vídeo both by mentor and the mentee may help consolidate the collaboration.

Video recording lessons are not common practice in the Greek Educational System. Nevertheless, I had it during my Lifelong Learning course during me Master degree. It was very helpful, although a little bit stressful because it was criticized , with a good way, by my peers and my Professor. I had the opportunity to see my posture, the way I was talking and moving, the interest or not of my peers in what I was saying, the body language of my peers , if my lesson was flowing well, my mistakes that I had to correct. That means I had the opportunity to observe myself and see my strong and weak points and find ways to correct them.

It was only used in my first year, because my supervisor was not able to come and observe my lesson and I had to send the video to her. I had to arrange a meeting the next few weeks to get feedback. I think this is the wrong reason for recording your lesson. You should record your lesson so that afterwards you can watch the video together with your supervisor/mentor and go over certain behaviors. Again, set your goals prior to watching the video. On what specific behavior are we going to focus on.

Actually I have used video recording in two situations, more than twenty years ago. The first experience was as a univerity student and it was part of a study my teacher of German was doing on how students analyse the mistakes they do while writing. The second was during my training year, also for a German lesson. I enjoyed both experiences a lot, since I learnt a lot from what I did, as well as from what my collegues did during a lesson and was able to correct some of the mistakes/ problems which were pointed out. In fact, after the first experience I became much more aware of my language mistakes and I still use this today, when I correct my students' mistakes and give them the feedback they need to improve their writing skills.

It is very helpful but also intimidating or embarrassing even if you are watching/listening to it by yourself! However, it can reveal nuances, repetitions, ineffective instructions and many many more, which only with consistent work can they change. All in all, I believe it is worth it. Now, again I think it can be more helpful if the focus is on a few things at a time.

That's why, whenever I find myself in need for filming some parts of the lesson, I do it using my own phone. Moreover, using these filmed spans as learning materials for other teachers would be highly profitable. Besides, I do celebrate the success of teachers by posting some of the amazing videos in my blog, so as other teachers would profit from.

Of course wathing a video together would be a big contribution to the mentoring process in providing the best tool to discover faults and flaws in one's teaching.

Whenever I watch myself or a colleague in the video this is really very interesting and useful. It is true that it makes a surprise and a special impression. It helps us observe things and gain consciousness in order to change them.

So, video is a strong tool for me. Lesson recording could provide me with the possibility of helping mentee to come back and watch the way they teach, the way the students react in related to the methods that mentee use. They could watch how involved the students in the learning process and their interest in the lesson.

One important thing for me to consider before using video in a lesson observation should be the preparation, just as I would have done if I had not used video recording. I mean to have a proper conversation with the mentee about the way we could use it and the things to see.

Another thing to consider is the way that both mentee and students react when video devices enter the classroom. From my experience, I realize that most times the presence of video recorders in the classroom makes the students kidding around and distracts attention. Also very often mentee has difficulty to teach as they become shy and more reserved than otherwise. However, there have been cases when mentee do his best effort trying to show a good image of themselves.

I haven't used video in the classroom but when I see myself in video I notice that sometimes I talk fast and move my hands a lot! A little tiring for others. I wouldn't have noticed it without the use of video. So Video recording is a powerful tool for capturing the moment. So I and the mentee can look back at the points we are interested in, but also observe points that have escaped us. The mentee has the opportunity to see her /himself in practice and asked the mentor specific questions. It is important to decide together when to record the course, how and for what purpose. The main rationale for using video is to provide information in order to stimulate feedback discussion, rather than embarrasses those involved (students, mentors, mentee). It is
therefore important that before the lesson recording that both the mentee and the students will be informed about the course recording as a part of a routine aimed at improving the lesson and not the negative judgment of teachers or students. This will create a safe climate and in the class so that everyone feels comfortable and not shy and embarrassed because of the "big brother" eye.

I saw lesson on youtube and then we had mentoring on skype. I could come back to some part of lesson and watched this again, my mentee did it the same way.

I teach at a photography school. We use video recording tools every day in our classes, but not for tutoring. When we asked the students to make their video resume, many of them felt they were blocked by the tool. The "older brother" effect is real.
I think it would be really very interesting, because it allows you to look at what you do in a different way: you can have a more critical and proactive analysis of the activity in the classroom.
My final activity would be to tutor all new school teachers for a maximum of two months. The goal is not to improve their performance, but to improve their knowledge of the community. An old tv spot said: If the cow is happier, his milk is better!

Most parents do not give their approval for recording their children. So, a good solution would be to record only the teacher (as a mentor or as a mentee) so as to watch the teaching procedure and study mistakes and the whole process. I have been recorded once in my early years as a teacher but the whole procedure was planned and settled. It was too far from real class life. Video recording can be useful but I do not believe in it very much, because if the children are aware of the camera, they have a total different behaviour than the usual one and this does not help the teacher to evaluate and evolve himself/herself.

I would first make a video for myself and analyze the video material with mentee. I would seek parental permission to record. I think a person can get objective information without recording, but the video is objective because it captures the moment as it is. It would be important for me to make the mentee feel relaxed and not feel the pressure of having to allow the recording. It is a great idea for students to be actively involved in this whole process.
