         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hook:Imagine what it might be like to work for hours without a break, being physically and verbally abused, and receiving little to no food and water.These conditions were killing for the slaves in the 1800s.<br>Background Information: Abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was born into slavery sometime around 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland. He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time.He advised presidents and many important leaders.Douglass made many efforts as an abolisher to end slavery.Douglass wrote and published his first autobiography, <em>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass</em>, an American Slave, in 1845. This was very important because it informed people about the horrible living and working of slaves.His end goal was for more people to recognize the hardships slaves had to face, and he accomplished that.<br><br>Thesis Statement:  Along with the use of powerful figurative language,Douglass uses his story to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slaveowners, which supports his position to end slavery.</div>]]></description>
