One of the major parts of Atticus Finch is how he upholds his morals in the face of adversity "“Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,” Atticus said."

Chapter 18 -
"When Atticus turned away from Mayella he looked like his stomach hurt, but Mayella's face was a mixture of terror and fury." (Lee 213) This shows how Atticus just tore into Mayella in the court case and gives a vivid description of what the aftermath was like in the courtroom.

As Tom gave his testimony, it really showed how lonely Mayella really was. Not leaving the house for 25 years, and also not understanding what Tom is saying, always thinking he's making fun of her. (Lee 218) This shows how desperate for attention and lonely Mayella is, and will do anything fro someone to cares about what she has to say.

When Atticus said, "Talk about what other people interested in about not what about what [one] are interested in" this means that instead of talking about ones self talk about what the person one is talking to wants to talk about. (Lee 174). (Book)

The truth is always better than a lie, even if other people do not believe one. So, when Atticus told Mr. Link Deas that Tom Robinson may end up going to "the chair" but only after "the truth is told" he meant that Robinson was going to tell the truth and if people did not believe him only then would he get the death sentence (Lee 166).

-In this quote Jem is getting in trouble with Calpurnia because he is laughing about sneaking out of the house and going to the court case, when he should be hanging his head in shame. This situation is kind of ironic when you think about it. Jem is laughing when he should be ashamed and remorseful. So this is Calpurnia's response "Hush your mouth sir! when you oughta be hangin' your head in shame you go along laughin'---" Calpurnia revived a series of rusty threats that moved Jem to little remorse, and she sailed up the steps with her classic, "If Mr. Finch don't wear you out, I will---get in that house sir!"(Lee 278).

2nd quote paraphrasing:
In this next quote, Reverend Sykes is telling Jem not to get to hopeful while they are sitting and watching the court case because a white man is always going to be sided with over a black man. This right here is another example of irony. The constitution says that all men are created equal yet they don't treat black people as equals. so here is the quote "It is to early to get excited Jem, the white man is always put before the black man in a court of law..."(Lee 279).

She had strong opinions about the way the children were raised after their mother had passed away calling it "heartbreaking the way Atticus Finch let her children run wild" (Lee 103).

-Atticus explains to the children how the world isn't fair, but there are far worse things that they could be going through. When times get rough, you just got keep your head up. Even though the children don't really understand the trial and why Atticus is choosing to help Tom Robinson, he hopes that they will once they grow up (Lee 108).

People are often quick to judge others, but according to Harper Lee, she tries, "to give 'em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason" (Lee 200). This shows that people are going to think what ever they want, so you should just be yourself. [Book]

Nothing mattered to Mayella Ewell until she did something that is indefinable, she tempted a black man (Lee 204).
