Through its facilities in Charlotte, NC, The Neurological Institute carries out research to determine the effectiveness of medications intended to treat Alzheimer’s disease. The Neurological Institute of Charlotte, NC, conducts its research in partnership with pharmaceutical companies that develop innovative drug therapies.

Alzheimer’s disease research moves forward thanks to generous funding by taxpayer-supported organizations like the National Institute on Aging and nonprofits like the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. Modern research focuses not only on novel treatment methods but also on progressing our basic understanding of the changes in the brain that give rise to Alzheimer’s symptoms like cognitive decline.

Today, nearly 100 Alzheimer’s drugs that seek to prevent and slow down the disease are in clinical trials to determine their efficacy. Before a drug can be approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it must undergo rigorous study. However, such studies cannot begin unless there are volunteers to participate in them. In the United States, there are more than 150 Alzheimer’s studies in need of tens of thousands of volunteer participants to move forward.
