I usually ask students about their interests and choose a short story or an episode from a series to read/watch for homework so we can talk about it in class later. Sometimes I choose the material based on topics seen in class, whether they are in the syllabus (textbook) or because they came up during a conversation in class. I also have them look up news articles to share in class to report what they read and use them as triggers for conversation as well as a source for new vocabulary.

However, it is true that the use of narrative tools in the class may strike as limiting some students. For teachers, it can be a great resource to approach teaching in a more challenging and enriching way.

A fun and engaging activity to foster reading as well as creative writing is including short stories in our class hiding the ending in order to have our students think of different paths the story can have. Once students have finished writing and finished sharing their endings, they proceed to read the actual one and see who the closest was.

Not only does this activity provide enough mystery and excitement for our students to keep reading, but it also develops their creativity and critical thinking skills.
