When the White House recently increased tariffs on imported goods from China, U.S. and Chinese leaders became divided on the subject. Some Chinese leaders believe that they should be pushing back against the U.S. and never compromise. China and the U.S. continue to go back in forth in the trade war, and with the 13th round of trade talks upcoming in September, neither side knows what they want.

On Monday, at the G7 summit in France, President Trump claimed that China had expressed its willingness to negotiate in the ongoing trade war during phone calls over the weekend. Beijing has repeatedly denied that any phone calls occurred.
“I have not heard of this situation regarding the two calls that the U.S. mentioned in the weekend,” -Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Trade is the buying and selling of goods between two parties, in this case, it's China and the United States. We are currently in the midst of a Trade War with China. When countries go back and forth trying to damage each others trade and economy, it is considered a trade war. Countries do this with the use of tariffs, taxes on imported goods from foreign countries. Tariffs have large impacts on countries' economies and its consumers. We are consumers, and we consume imports from other foreign countries. The U.S. imports approximately $550-600 billion worth of goods from China. But when tariffs are put on imports, prices increase. This especially damages the lower class; when prices increase on basic needs, the remainder of money that's spent on other essentials is lower. Typically, the country that receives more imports from foreign countries has the advantage because they have more opportunities to make the other country economically suffer with tariffs. So in the current trade war with China, the U.S. has more leverage and China is in a more vulnerable spot. As the articles said, Pres. Trump recently imposed tariffs on imported goods from China worth $300 billion or more. This lead to tariff increases on exported goods from the U.S. to China, and counters to that from the U.S.

Below is a chart representing the trade gap between the United States and China. China is importing around $550-600 billion worth of goods to the U.S., while the U.S. is exporting around $200 billion worth of goods to China. Another way this can be analyzed, is how the U.S. has the advantage in the trade war with China. Because of how much less it exports to China, the U.S. is less vulnerable to tariffs.
