After Kabila became president, he promised democracy and free elections by 1999. When those promises were never fulfilled, the nation endured another round of civil war in 2000. 3 different rebel groups wanted to overthrow Kabila's Autocratic rule. In 2001, he was assassinated by a bodyguard. After his son Joseph Kabila took over, he began seeking peace. In 2002, the country’s government signed peace deals with neighboring countries and different rebel groups. In 2006, Kabila was elected president under a new constitutional rule. In 2008, the government and 20 rebel groups signed a peace agreement to end the fighting in the Eastern part of the nation. (Module 30)

On the morning of September 11, 2001 The Arab terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 U.S planes and crashed into the twin towers. Another plane hit the Pentagon outside of Washington D.C while the fourth plane hit an empty field in Pennsylvania. The strikes in NYC caused mass destruction causing explosions and fires that caused great damage to skyscrapers near the twin towers. The fire and debris caused nearby buildings to collapse as well. This event killed nearly 3,000 people, all passengers on the planes died along with many of the people working and visiting the world trade center and the pentagon. 340 NYC firefighters and 60 police officers died as well. Americans changed the way they viewed terrorism and began feeling vulnerable and afraid that these attacks can happen again. (Module 32.pdf)

2003: The Completion of the Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project’s 2003 completion of a human gene map advanced the development of molecular medicine a lot. This field focuses on how genetic diseases develop and progress, aiming to identify disease-causing genes for early detection and treatment. Gene therapy, another area of focus, involves using genes to treat diseases by replacing, getting rid of/deactivating, or adding genes. The ultimate goal is to create personalized drugs based on a person's genetic makeup. The Human Genome Project was a major event in the early 2000s because it was the first time scientists had a complete map of all human genes. This was a huge step forward in understanding how the human body works at the genetic level. It opened up new possibilities for diagnosing, treating, and even preventing diseases based on a person’s DNA. The project also led to major advances in technology and research, changing the future of medicine and biology. (Module 32.pdf)
