Si on change un de ces acides aminés par un autre, la protéine risque d'adopter une toute autre forme. Or la fonction remplie par la protéine dans la cellule dépend avant tout de sa forme/structure: structure primaire, secondaire, tertiaire ou quaternaire.
Exemple: l'hémoglobine possède une structure quaternaire

Epissage: mécanisme post-transcriptionnel permettant l'obtention d'un ARN messager par l'élimination des parties non codantes (introns) d'un ARN prémessager.

Traduction: mécanisme permettant la synthèse d'une chaîne polypeptidique (protéine) à partir d'un ARN messager.

Codon: triplet de nucléotides présent sur un ARNm.

Ribosomes: organites composés de deux sous-unités et présent dans le cytoplasme des cellules. Leur rôle est de synthétiser les protéines en décodant l'information contenue dans l'ARN messager.

Interprétation des graphiques présentés dans l'animation:
-la vitesse des ondes P et S augmente de façon globalement constante jusqu'à 3000km de profondeur, cela veut donc dire que les roches traversées par les ondes deviennent de plus en plus denses, du fait de la pression plus intense.
-en passant du manteau inférieur au noyau externe, les ondes P ralentissent de moitié, tombant à des valeurs d'environ 7km/s, alors que les ondes S quant à elles sont brutalement stoppées. On remarque par ailleurs qu'à ce point la densité augmente brusquement. La cause de ces brusques changements dans le comportement des ondes est due à un changement des propriétés chimiques des milieux traversés : bien que la densité soit plus élevée, le milieu traversé est plus fluide, ce qui contribue à ralentir les ondes.
