These children worked long hours and worked a very dangerous jobs. They hired children as early as the age of seven to do jobs of adults. They were mainly employed for their small size so they can squeeze around all the big machinery.

1834 Cast Iron Stove

The stove was an important invention because many other stoves were too big and too expensive to own. Although Philo Stewart created a smaller cast iron stove that could fit in homes and after this innovation about 90,000 were sold.

1793 Slater Mill

This was the first successful mills in the United States. It was built in Pawtucket, RI and was the first of its kind to be powered by a water wheel.

1837 Steel plow

Early 1830's Lowell girl's

The Lowell girls worked in the Lowell Mills with long hours and dangerous jobs. They lived in boarding houses and were fed meals there. They changed the industry by making items in factories instead of their homes.

1800's factory cities

1844 Telegraph

The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse. He invented Morse code which is a series of specific dots so people could communicate with each other from far away.

1847 Mechanical Reaper
