The killing of Bob stirred up each side in both anger and fear, and as Randy explained, social norms dictated that all the Socs hate on the greasers or suffer the consequence of being a social outcast (the reader can assume it's the same for the greasers, which causes a vicious cycle). The Rumble was a long time coming; there was no avoiding it.
