Tell us your name, what course you are studying, and your initial ideas on what being a 'successful professional' looks like to YOU. And, don't forget to upload a photo of yourself so we can all put faces to names and feel more like a real classroom :)

Hi All,
I live in Alice Springs, oringially from a small rural town in NSW, I moved to the Red Center in May last year. I live here with my partner of 4 years and our fur baby Maggie.

I have been studying via Distance with CSU since session 3 of 2013 and am finally on my final subjects! This session I am studying MGT367 & PSY305, all going well I will be able to graduate in August with a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) with a joint study in Psychology.

My initail ideas of being a "successful professional" is that if you are hard working, willing to help others, set your mind to acheiving your own personal goals and in general just being an all round decent human, it will reflect on your ability to be successful in not only a professional sense but in all aspects of your life.

Below is a Photo of me and the "better half" from a trip to the Victorian coast over christmas. It's very rare that we get to see the Ocean these days.

Cheers
Amanda :)

I live in Sydney and I am now on the home run to completing and graduating with a Bachelor of Business (HRM) with a joint study in Management this year. I'm kicking goals and ready to be challenged with new things. I have been studying via distance whilst working full-time, so as much as it has been a challenge, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I am into entertaining, travelling, photography and I love reading about everything.
I am certainly in that phase of my career where I am ready to jump into a new challenge . My professional career has developed in so many ways, but ideally focusing on my personal goals and aligning that to the business goals as well as bringing my own ethics into the workplace are some things that have helped me to become a better team player and business stakeholder.
Below is a photo of myself (at the front in the indiana jones hat) and my partner in crime enjoying a holiday in Penang, Malaysia.
Goodluck everyone!
Cheers
Dimi :)
PS. Jennifer - I've noticed I have you as my Lecturer for my 2 subjects this semester. Looking forward to it.

This includes looking at ways to innovate, being proactive when it comes to change and implementing strategies and knowing how to deal with challenges that are faced. They are often leaders and appreciate that the organisation could not be the way it is today, if it wasn't for the right people, with the right skills in the right jobs.
Thank you

Mariah :)

Aside from being multilingual (when it comes to greetings), I am 32yo, married, have a 2yo son, work full time as a Project Accountant, and live in Orange; I'm also a volunteer firefighter with the RFS.

I am studying a B. of Business Studies; and, hopefully, this is my last year of study - that is dependent on my ability to study two subject per session. Which, before my son was born, I would have said was easy.....

Anyway, in regards to the question about a successful professional, my initial thought was, why 'professional' and not 'leader'; perhaps leader would have been too obvious? My second thought was, a professional what!? Perhaps the question is seeking an answer based on the shared qualities of all professionals. Which, ultimately, brings into focus the notion of success. What is success? What does success look like? Talk about a can of worms....

The question, therefore, may be more of an exercise in exposing our preconceived notions of success, rather than our preconceived notions of professionalism...

I guess, I would define a successful professional as someone who is able to competently perform their work, someone who is passionate about their work, someone who inspires others to become more passionate about their work, someone who is rewarded for their work, and someone who is recognised by others, in a positive way, for the work that they do.

I currently work fulltime for the NSW State Government and have two very busy primary school aged children (an aspiring dancer and soccer star) which at times is challenging to keep up with.

My initial ideas on what a ‘successful professional’ looks like depends on what success is. I am interpreting this to be a person who is passionate about their work who has achieved success in their career goals. For me you can be successful at your role within an organisation but that doesn’t mean you are the main influential leader. For example, I have seen so many researchers in their respective fields achieve amazing break throughs in science but when it comes to be the national leader in their fields they become quite uncomfortable with that role. So, they are successful in what they set out to do perhaps leading and inspiring a small team but are not always ready to on lead on a larger scale.

My photo is of my amazing husband and I on a rare mini holiday break in Sydney with the kids in January. Without his help I wouldn’t be where I am today juggling so many things at once.

I am looking forward to this subject and learning with you all!

I thoroughly enjoy the study of business organisations and psychology, and I have the ambition of opening a clinic one day that will help specialise in providing services addressing men's mental health and create opportunities for people to explore their minds and the habbitual thought patterns which create disorders and dsyfunction.

My idea of a successful person is someone who holds a worthy ideal, and is graudually working towards the attainment or realisation of that goal. No matter how big or small that predetermined objective may be, if it is what they intended to accomplish and their is progress toward that goal, that person is directed, and in my perspective a success.
A leader on the other hand, is a person who stakes pride, position and popularity in exchange for influence; that can channel a group's effort and energy into the progression of their objective.

My idea of being a successful professional is someone who through ongoing development, possess the skills and capabilities to complete the tasks required of them. They are able to work efficiently and effectively with others in both the role of a leader and as a follower when necessary.
Finally I believe a successful professional is someone who enjoys what they do.

Hi All,
My name is Lyndal Arentsen and I am in my last year of a Bachelor of Business Studies and I have done my degree through distance ed as I work full time as a Restaurant Manager for McDonalds Port Macquarie.

In my opinion to become a successful professional you must be able to multi-task and have high organisation skills. You have to be able to empower those around you and deliver the information you know and understand to others in a way they will embrace it and use it. Not everyone learns the same and being able to adapt yourself for the different people around you is part of your success. Hi my name is Martin Azzopardi and I live in the Blacktown region of NSW. I have been in the workforce for over 20 years working mostly within Pharmaceutical and medical device fields. I have never completed any tertiary education since completing my HSC so I decided to complete a Bachelor of Business Management. I am in my 3rd year. In my opinion to be a successful professional you need to be able to never stop learning, teach the skills you have gained to others and continue to strive to better yourself. One who believes that they have reached the pinnacle of their profession will most likely be left behind.

Yamandhu Marang!? (Wiradjuri – Are you well?)
My name is Michael Newman, I’m a proud Wiradjuri man, living in Orange NSW. I am a NSW Public Servant of 10 years working with NSW Education, FACS NSW, NSW Police Force, Ageing, Disability and Home Care and most recently Aboriginal Affairs NSW. I’m in my third(ish) year of a Bachelor of Business (Management & Human Resource Management), with my extensive travel for work, I’ve had to have some time off from studying here and there unfortunately, but I really enjoy studying.. well.. mostly J.

To me a successful professional is someone who develops, inspires and empowers those around them to achieve shared outcomes through sharing knowledge and power, strong communication and hard work.

I’m lucky to have a bit of experience working in a numerous different organisations with different organisational culture and have been exposed to very different managers and leaders with unique styles and traits (some effective and some ineffective).

Looking forward to having a yarn with you and hopefully learning more about you all and indeed leadership issues.

Hey everyone,
My name is Kataryna Kafantaris (or Kat - to make it easier). I am a full time 3rd year, studying a Bachelor of Business. I am 21 years old and are currently working 3 jobs (specialising in hospitality and retail) to pay off the bills (textbooks/courses) and prepare myself the future. I currently live in a Port Macquarie, which runs along the mid north coast (aka - beach heaven).

To me, successful professionals is an individual who has overcome an abundance of challenges in life, learnt from them and found a way to excel throughout their lives to achieve their goals/aspirations. The individual is open to suggestions and/or pointers, as it grows their knowledge and experience, as they are passionate to learn and succeed in their industry. They are able to work well with others, but, they are also comfortable with making their own decisions and knuckling down by themselves when necessary.

For me a successful professional is a person who is satisfied with how he perform professionally or chooses to focus in doing things that are more important. For instance, at work place you may have to work with some people who are not nice at all. Instead, you will need to look far more professional if you don't allow them walk on you. You have to remain easy to work with.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Toni and I'm a single mother of three from Busselton in WA, returning to studying my bachelor of business in HR full time this year. I'm a person who has struggled to find fulfilment in my work life thus I have tried my hand at various different trades. nursing, beauty therapy, electrical trades and hospitality are the main ones.
Success for me in regards to work would be a position that I look forward to being in every day. Somewhere that I can make a difference to others. I don't necessarily need to be the leader but I love the idea of being able to inspire others to achieve more than what is expected. I think some leaders are born with a natural ability to do so, but I think that they can also be made through training and education and that means anyone can be a leader, as long as they have the will.

I live in Port Stephens NSW and I currently work in Local Government. I moved from Sydney over 13 years ago and enjoy the lifestyle of slow place living. I have a koala that lives in my street who likes to keep me up at night. lol

My idea of a successful professional is a person who can motivate, inspire, and mentor others by bringing out the best in people that they associate with on any level within an organisation.

I am excited about undertaking this leadership course to learn about the different leadership styles and how I can transform with new knowledged learnt from this subject.

I have worked in Local Government Industry for 28 years and I have encountered Managers in the past who apply intimidation tactics towards their staff. Those managers have been good examples throughout my career as I definately don't want to be like them.

Buon Giorno,
Hey Everyone, my name is Dominic Giuliano. I am in my final year of Business management.

Hello everyone,

My name is Bridgitte and I am in my final year studying a Bachelor of Business. Whilst studying I also work full time for NSW Health. In my spare time I like to compete in triathlons and help out my husband on our farm. I live a short drive to Orange.

I believe a successful person is someone who is passionate about the work/job they are in, and feel that they are making an impact or contribution to their organisation in their role. They actively work on themselves, and consistently refine their skills and thinking. Successful individuals also make measurable short and long term career goals and ensure that they are achieved. They’re inspired and energised to continually find new ways to use their skills to assist others.

Hi All,
My name is Cara and I live in Orange, NSW. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Business Studies which I hope to finish this year.

Hello!
My name is Saskia-Jayne Handley and I am in my final year of a Bachelor of Business
Management/Marketing. I study at Bathurst CSU and am a local to the region.

To me, to be a successful professional, you need to feel like you are making a difference to the lives of those whom you come in contact with, including: society at large, your clients, your team members and those you work with and importantly yourself and your family.

Success means many different things to different people but if my career does not foster meaningful relationships and networks along the way and create worthwhile, practical ways to enrich the lives of others what is the point?

I bring a philanthropic view of management and leadership to the table as this is what success looks like to me.

I look forward to working with you all.

Hi Folks
I'm Mike Colreavy from Sapphire Beach near Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast.

After completing 20 subjects, I put Business Studies at MCAE Bathurst on hold in 1975 and am just now resuming it with 6 subjects to go - the landscape has changed a lot in the intervening 43 years.

My work has included time in local government, small business, and management consulting. I have lead workforces of up to 500 people at CEO level and now I provide strategic consulting services.

To me, a successful professional is accomplishing their professional objectives - achieving their planned visions and goals.
While being a 'successful professional' is not the same as being a 'leader', holding leadership qualities is one essential attribute leading to that success along with others including passion, ethics, competence, know-how, experience and support.

Hallo
Hallo; that's Afrikaans for hello, it's also German for hello.

HI Everyone,
My name is Darren Jeffery and this year I am celebrating the 27th anniversary of my 21st birthday.
Originally from New South Wales, I now live in Country Regional Victoria.

While currently studying my last year of a Bachelor of Business Management through distance education, I work full-time as the Chef in Charge for nine Regional Country Victorian Hospitals and Aged Care Facilities, whilst also doing Relief Hospitality and Environmental Services Manager role duties.

Whilst spare time at the moment is a luxury, spending time with my wife, fishing and playing golf are my interests (the wife is happy I put them in that order).

Whilst many people debate that being a professional is someone who has formal qualifications in a particular field of endeavour, I Believe that being a successful professional is all about ensuring that you have the best possible gained knowledge and experience levels required in order to facilitate you chosen career path's undertakings.

Having either professional development or tertiary education qualifications is no given to conducting yourself 'professionally'.

Mannerisms, ethics, morals, ideals, education, leadership, training and development are all parts of how you develop your ability to conduct yourself in a professional manner.

Working with, inspiring and developing those around you is a major component of being a successful professional.

Thank you for your time in reading my introduction and I look forward to completing this subject.
Cheers

Darren

Hello everyone, my name is Mariah. I live in a small rural town, Junee. Which is 40kms from Wagga Wagga in NSW. I am currently in my 3rd year, studying a Bachelor of Business (Management) and have enjoyed what I have learnt so far.
I am also working part-time with a local real estate firm, Remax Elite as a Tenancy Manager and Business Development Manager. I enjoy reading, photography and spending time with family and friends.

Being surrounded with two "successful professionals" in their field, they have the traits in which I believe makes them a successful professional. This includes looking at ways to innovate, being proactive when it comes to change and implementing strategies and knowing how to deal with challenges that are faced. They are often leaders and appreciate that the organisation could not be the way it is today, if it wasn't for the right people, with the right skills in the right jobs.
Thank you

Mariah :)

I live in Wollongong, work full time, have three kids (although the older two have recently left home) and have been studying for what feels like forever but is actually going on five years now! I still have a fair few subjects to go but am really enjoying each semester and looking forward to this subject.

At work last year I was promoted to the position of team leader, so I am hoping that this journey over the next four months will help me better understand the broader issues as well as develop my own leadership style and skills.

Hi Everyone

Hi All,
I live in Alice Springs, oringially from a small rural town in NSW, I moved to the Red Center in May last year.

Hi All, I am Rosemary, mum of 3 boys, living in Sydney, work part time for NAB and I study via distance. The degree I am doing is a Bachelor of Business Studies. When I started this in Nov 16, I was extremely overwhelmed and I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. In saying that, this subject is one of the last 3 I need to complete in order to get the degree I have been wanting for years. That to me is success in its own right. As a successful professional, one needs to love what they do and make a difference in the organisation they work for. This can simply be by anticipating the needs of your colleagues and your customers.
Finally, Jen was the lecturer I had when I did my very first distance subject, and I am very excited to have her again - we are all in good hands! Look forward to working with you all!!

Hi All, my name is Lee Spencer I am a mother of 3 and I am currently working as a business consultant in Port Macquarie NSW. I am in my 3rd year of a Bachelor of Business (Management) / Social Science (Psychology) degree.

A successful professional to me is one who fundamentally understands the Mission of the organisation and can align behaviour and strategy to ensure that the mission is lived out and organisational goals are achieved. They are comfortable with (and see the importance of) driving change but, at the same time, are respectful of history and tradition. They build and maintain relationships well and have an ability to translate their “message” according to their audience. Finally, a successful professional is open and accountable, they celebrate their success but equally ‘own’ and learn from their mistakes.

Hey everyone,

I am currently enrolled into Bachelor of Business Management.

To me a Successful Professional is someone who has excelled professionally and still humble enough to have a meaningful conversation with an average jo. One example, I am currently reading a book titled Good to Great by Jim Collins. In one of the chapters he talks about Darwin Smith. Darwin Smith was appointed CEO of Kimberly-Clark in 1971. To the Board of Directors, Darwin Smith lacked the qualifications and the Board weren't sure they had made the right decision on appointing Darwin Smith as CEO. But he transformed Kimberly-Clark, which stock had fallen 36% below market value, to a leading paper based consumer product in a 20year period. Under his leadership, Kimberly-Clark out done it competitors such as Scott Paper and outperforming Coca-Cola and HP. Jim Collins describe Darwin Smith as someone that carried no self-importance and he found companionship amongst "tradies". He wasn't captivated by the executive celebrity status nor did he have an ego problem. To me that is a Successful Professional. Someone who has lead an organisation to greatness and still humble enough to be down-to-earth conversation. To be able to lead by examp
le. It also talks about 5 types of leadership for those that are interested in reading it. Cheers
