According to the National Institutes of Health, 1 in 3 teens (ages 13-18) experience anxiety (McCarthy, 2019). The number of teens with anxiety rose 20% between 2007 and 2012, with hospital admissions for suicidal teens also doubling (McCarthy, 2019). There are a number of factors that can be contributing to the rise. Including, but not limited to

Changes in brain chemistry

Life events

Genetics

Personality

Other influences have been attributed to:

Social media usage

Social influences like drills & lockdowns in schools & community violence

Social justice awareness or experiences like protests & other political conflicts

Environmental disasters

Watching the news

The demands of and prevalence of standardized testing.

With so many factors that can be traced to the cause of adolescent anxiety, it is no wonder teens are in need of a way to process the world around them. Providing books featuring characters that reflect different cultures, physical and mental qualities, and ways of life is beneficial to teens. Literature provides teens with a way to further develop their emotional intelligence, nutures growth of their personality and social skills, and process difficult themes (Crippen, 2012). In addition, readers are able to develop their own opinions on topics found in books. This strengthens their cognitive development and deep thinking skills (Crippen, 2012).

On this Padlet you will find a variety of resources to share with your teen including books, podcasts, and organizations that specialize in helping those with anxiety.

References:
Crippen, M.
