While on the front, they are grim and beaten down by constant enemy barrages, but when in the reserves they are cheerful, happy and make the most of what they have.  I predict that by the end of the book that Paul will be either dead, or will survive the war, but be broken inside.

After having completed their military training under a disgracefully ruthless man named Himmelstoss, they are sent to the western front where they become beaten and battered by the horrors of the war. Although they are only 18, they are among the most experienced of the troops, mainly because most of the troops are new recruits to replace the dead. Eventually Paul is allowed to go home for a few days, before he has to go to more training and return to the front. I would not like t live there at the same time and place of the book because I would most likely die. I would still not like to live there in the modern day because the remains of the front are either monuments, toxic, or have unexploded shells in the area.
