During World War II, two sisters named Freddie and Truus Oversteegen were active in the Dutch resistance movement. The sisters' mother taught in them the value of opposing inequality as they were growing up in Haarlem, Netherlands . When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in May 1940, the sisters and their mother worked together to distribute resistance-related booklets and anti-Nazi journals . Additionally, they took cautions to the streets because German ads were urging males to find employment in Germany . When a commander of the Haarlem Resistance Group paid their mother a visit in 1941, he asked whether he could enroll Truus and Freddie. The sisters decided to join with their mother's approval. The sisters lured, ambushed, and murdered German Nazis with their new Dutch ally, along with a young woman named Hannie Schaft.

The sisters had to deal with the distress of killing people and losing their best friend after the war. Truus made sculptures and then wrote and spoke about their involvement in the resistance movement. Freddie said that she dealt "by getting married and having babies." But she continued to have insomnia as a result of her combat experience. The sisters never disclosed the number of Nazis they had killed. Instead Freddie said “You never ask a soldier how many people he’s killed.”
