Young girls of the Padaung tribe in Southeast Asia have participated in this painful process as a rite of passage into adulthood. Neck coils is estimated to be used back to the 11th century and starts at a very young age when the neck bones are still small and flexible. Although the look is an illusions of types, the neck never actually stretches but instead the collar bone collapses, and as result the upper ribs bare the pressure as well.

Neck Elongating Still Practiced Within This Indigenous Tribe."

Foot binding was inspired by a 10-century court dancer named Yao Niang who bound her feet into the shape of a new moon. She entertained Emperor Li Yu by dancing on her toes wearing a six-foot golden lotus festooned with ribbons and precious stones. Altering the shape of a foot, the practice also produced a particular sort of gait that relied on the thigh and buttock muscles for support.

Foreman, Amanda. "Foot Binding."
