There is a volunteer-run monthly art program similar to what she talks about, but it's not enough. I grew up with art as a standard specialist class along with P.E., music, and library and it doesn't really make sense that art should be singled out while the other classes get to stay. In Kinder we do a lot of art projects as part of curriculum - if we're learning about plants, we make a collage of a sunflower showing the different parts of the plant. Creative thinking means being able to adapt! 

Also, I think it would be interesting to see why divergent thinking isn't found in adults-- I would think that brain development may have something to do with it as well. (Not that I don't think that art should be taught as well!)

It is a shame that there are schools without access to art instruction. I have been in them. What missed opportunities.

I don’t remember having an “art” class as an elementary student. I love creating and making things, but I’ve never considered myself an artist. I did have access to music instruction, and although I’ve never been a great musician, I do consider myself a musician.
