They used fear to manipulate them because they no longer wanted to continue on the trip after being scared. At the end of the movie all of the characters get split up in the haunted house. As they are walking through they see their friends one by one getting killed. This uses fear because they ended up regretting going at all. The one person still alive swears she will never go back into a haunted house again.

This event cause fear among people all over the country. This made people be more careful and more observant of their surroundings. People were suddenly cautious about flying on planes and going into the city. Although we as Americans have overcome this tragedy it always remains in the back of our minds.
