Story of our names

Becoming and claiming who we are
Names make us whole
Connect us to history
Define us
Serve as markers and milestones
Represent powerful people
Distinguish us

How did you get your name? What is the story of your name?

AnaMaria - named for her great grandmother. When she became an artist, she removed the space between her name. There is no negotiation. When you say her name, she hears her vowels, culture, and feels safe.

Seth Lamar - Seth happens to be his middle name. It’s a biblical name, and the older brother of Cain and Abel. When he moved to New York City, he started to go by his middle name rather than Clayton or Clay. Change comes in tens.

Kristin Bernard - she’s a triplet and her parents picked three boy names and three girl names. If she were a boy, she would have been named Nicholas. She’s never had a middle name and just goes by Kristin.

Adeline Medeiros - Was born Kelly Adeline Medeiros. Adeline is her paternal mother’s name. Medeiros is a common last name within her town. It connects her to where her family is from. Many people learned that her first name is Kelly during her wedding.

Sara Alvarez - Sara and her sister didn’t have names for a week. Sara and her sister were “randomly” assigned their names upon birth. When Sara moved to DR, she was called Sarita. This was new to her, but when she moved back to New York, she continued to respond to “Sarita.” This brings her back to her childhood and has started to embrace it.

Steven Adam Toledo - Their family has a lot of biblical names.

Kelsey Smith - Kelsey always resented “Kelsey S.” Kelsey has a cool name, often called Kelly or Chelsey. Her middle name is Katherine, which is also her mother’s name.

Erasma Beras-Monticciolo - last born, many are much older, so she’s a self-proclaimed only child. Thanks to Frank, she began to appreciate the meaning of her name: full of life and zestful. After this quest, she learned that she was named after her grandmother. Erasma was determined and always exercised her voice.

Fatima Malik - Fatima Zahra, she is also named because her family is/was religious. Fatima is the oldest. Her other siblings are Fatima ***. Her siblings will go by their middle names, but in their professional lives, they do go by “Fatima.” Fatima is a common name and she can’t find the meaning beyond being the prophet Muhammad’s daughter.

I heard commonalities between some of us about being earlier in the journey of doing the "work" and sharing in the fear and discomfort that goes along with it. I think this shared understanding and shared fear is something that can bond us and push those of us along who may be more worried about making mistakes. We can support each other in making the progress we want to see. If feels comforting that there are others on the team who have similar feelings as myself.
I don't think that as a leadership team we discuss the different privileges, powers and perspectives we bring to the group. This work today was a great first step of naming the elephant in the room so we can begin to incorporate it into our discussions and make that elephant appear smaller and smaller as we get more comfortable.

for some reason I keep bringing this CRT work back to my age. I think so often I used to think about CRT solely as "race" but then I realize it's more about intersections of our identities and those privileges that come along with that. Why I keep thinking back to my age is because (I think) I'm the only "gen z" in the room. Back in KS, I used to be the only person of color in the room. So I guess as I develop into a professional world, I'm starting to really see how ALL of my identities influence how I interact with my team. I'm really happy that as an LT, yall embolden me to participate, to join, to talk, to share my stories. For me, it really translates into the work that we do where we give the tools they need to make their own lives a success.
