On page 28, we find out that Mo is keeping journals and maps of her life and her quest to find her "Upstream Mother" who she lost at birth. This is important because I think that this is going to be Mo's motivation for almost everything she does in the book. I predict that she will have to make a desicion sometime in the future of the book, and her "Upstream Mother" will be the cause of the choice she ends up making.

On page 112, Mo has to make a desision that won't affect her greatly but could affect another character in the book. This is conflicting to the main character because she can either do what she wants and ruin a characters life, or stay away and keep everyone safe, even if it makes her unhappy. Mo's motivation for staying away from Ana, came from Dale. Dale made sure that Mo didn't get to upset with Anna and made sure that Mo did what she had to. Dale is the main motivation for Mo because all Mo wants to do is protect her best friend, Dale, even though doing so conflicts with her own needs/wants.

On page 196, Miss Lana donates $300 to Mo's organization for Lavender. That is 6 times what other people payed as a minimum. I think that Miss Lana did this because she is wealthier than she lets on. Everyone thinks she is poor and has no money, but I think she is hiding the 500,000 dollars somewhere. This is also why Slate kidnapped her. Miss Lana is supose to be broke and I think this is why she told Mo to keep quiet about her spending the $300 on an advertisement. I believe that she is secretly rich and she doesn't want others to know because it would conflict with her image and everyone would see her as a lier, a gold digger, and/or even a thief.

There are multiple parts in this book where Mo keeps things from detective Starr. I believe that she is motivated to do this because she doesn't want to have to rely on detective Starr to solve the case. She did not want him to take her evidence even though it was a big part of solving right now. This is the conflicting part. Mo is trying to do something for herself again, but it is preventing the town from finding out who killed Mr. Jesse and also preventing herself from finding Miss Lana and the Colonel. If she had just told detective Starr what she found out, she could have helped solve the murder and if she could have just shared what she knew about the Colonel and his money, she might have found where Slate was keeping the Colonel and Miss Lana hostage.

On page 234, Slate says he wants half of a million dollars to get Miss Lana and the Colonel back. Slate thinks that Mo knows where the Colonel kept his rumored money. The conflicting part though, is that the Colonel's money is a false rumor. The colonel and Miss Lana are broke. There is a little section of diolauge in the book that says:
"'A ransom?' Dale gasped. 'How Much?'
'A half-million dollars,' he said, and Miss Rose sat down hard beside me.
Lavender gulped. ' A half-million dollars? The Colonel ain't got that kind of money. Shoot, everybody in town together ain't got that kind of money.'
'I know,' Starr said. 'But Slate thinks he does, and he seems to think Mo knows how to get her hands on it.'"
This piece of text shows me that Slate believed a rumor and now it becomes conflicting because no one has that kind of money, even if they were willing to give it all up to save Miss Lana and the Colonel. This also shows me how much a character's motivations and desires can impact and cause problems for other characters in the book.

On page 309 Mo finds a bottle in the river. She contemplates opening it because she thinks that if she opens it and it is her "Upstream mother" than she would have to go back with her. This would ruin a happy life with the Colonel and Miss Lana that she as had for the past 11 years. This is conflicting because she has to choose, her birth mother, who she knows nothing about, or she can continue her perfectly good life with the people who raised her.
