Far right supporter was outcast by NY Times Reporter

The New York Times published an article about an unsuspected man with extreme political views. The article described him as an extreme nationalist who sympathized with the Nazi regime. This public information was believed to have caused his separation of employment and financial hardships. According to the Washington Post,Tony Hovater was fired from his job at 571 Grill & Draft House a result of his far right affiliation, his wife and brother-in law were also released from their respective duties at the restaurant shortly following his departure. Hovater claims that since his residential address was leaked to the public coupled with the unfair dismissal from his job he was forced to relocate his family elsewhere and start anew. Threats from those who did not share the same political viewpoints as him also began to pile up. The Washington Posts shared the restaurant owners statement Wednesday saying, “that they did not know of Hovater’s white nationalist views until the Times article was published. They said the article illustrated “some very disturbing images and thoughts” that they do not share (Phillips, 2017). The restaurant claims that the release of the three employees was purely a business decision and was in the best interest and safety of the other employees working at the establishment. First of all, we are faced with the topic of political pluralism in this article. By no means am I advocating the far right movement, but I will say that freedom of speech and the right to identify with certain political parties should not be punishable if no threats or violent protests are being made. On the other hand, we are discussing the toleration of intolerance at its inner core. The followers of fascist regimes and their values of hate and discrimination should not be embraced in today’s society. As a global community we have worked too hard to fight for social justice, and the intolerance of those who sympathize with genocide, is not condoned by most, certainly not me. What I came to realize is that Tony Hovater is a hypocrite fighting for something that he does not believe in himself. He is claiming economic inequality based on his political affiliation, yet the very group he supports discriminates against others who suffered from this very same injustice because the color of their skin ort religion. Do I think Hovater should have been fired based on his values? Absolutely not. However, if Hovater and his family were the result of a hostile work environment then something had to be done.Perhaps, the restaurant could have relocated them to another location or exhausted other efforts. Lastly, the New York Times reporter could have been more subtle in his article instead of profiling Hovater and opening the floodgates for public humiliation and persecution.

Disparities of special education between white children and those of color.

According to the Huffington Post children of color are less likely to be diagnosed with learning disabilities than their white counterparts and this has resulted in a racial gap in special education. The belief is children from lower income families are being placed into lower resource skills without the services necessary to succeed. The government needs to fund resources to help children of the inner city receive the diagnosis and services necessary to progress through life. This touches on equal opportunity which was discussed this past week in class.

According to the NY Times, for the first time euthanasia is legal in Australia. Those with terminal illness or with a life expectancy less than 6 months can participate in voluntary active euthanasia. I believe the ability for someone to leave on their own terms is a great idea that should be legalized in the states.
