Sichelgaita of Salerno, the Longobard princess who married Roberto il Guiscardo, is one of the most fascinating and charismatic figures in the history of our city. Daughter of Guaimar IV married Roberto after his divorce with Alberada. Immediately he followed his husband devoutly in his wars of conquest by advising him and descending, often, even on the battlefield.

 She was the organizer of the first Council of Melfi where the Normans made an alliance with the papacy and, when Roberto laid siege to the city of Salerno, was at his side to welcome the citizens who fled from the city governed by his brother Gisulfo II. Once again in Salerno, a legend has it that he tried to poison Boemondo, son of Roberto and Alberada, in order to make his son, Roger Borsa, become a legitimate heir of the Duchy of Puglia and Calabria. The question of inheritance was resolved when Boemondo renounced leaving for the first crusade where he became prince of Antioch.

 She followed her husband Roberto even in the wars of conquest in the east where the chronicler Anna Comnena called her: "A new Pallas, if not a new Athena" to emphasize the figure of warrior princess that Sichelgaita masterly interpreted. She was at the side of her husband during the rescue of Gregory VII and in the next eastern campaign where Roberto died due to an illness. Back in Salerno, she studied medicine at the Salernitana Medical School. He died in 1090
