Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a severe respiratory disease in humans that can result from infection with hantaviruses. Hantavirus is spread by rodents through their urine, droppings, and saliva. Air-borne droplet transmission has also been known to occur. This specific virus can not be passed from person to person.

The hantaviruses found in the Americas (New World hantaviruses) attack the lungs, causing HPS. It is an infectious disease characterized by flu-like symptoms, and can progress rapidly into life-threatening breathing problems. The strains of hantavirus found in Europe and Asia may also cause a form of kidney disease called Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).

People infected with HPS may experience flu-like symptoms that including fever, chills, headaches, and muscle aches. The infection is difficult to distinguish from influenza in the early stages. After about 4-10 days, more serious signs and symptoms may develop. Those symptoms include a cough that produces secretions, shortness of breath, and low blood pressure. It is best to seek medical attention if experiencing any of these symptoms.

Keeping rodents out of your home and workplace can help reduce your risk of hantavirus. Sealing up holes and gaps in your home and placing traps also decrease the likelihood of rodent infestation. Cleaning and sanitizing easy to get to foods and messes can also be helpful. Wet down dead rodents and areas where rodents have been found with alcohol, household disinfectants, or bleach. This kills the virus and helps prevent infected dust from being stirred up in the air.

There is no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for hantavirus infection. Treatment in the ICU is mostly supportive and may include oxygen therapy and fluid replacement. At times, antiviral drugs are used to treat other strains of the hantavirus. Recovery can be slow and cause bone weakness.

People who usually live in areas near forests, fields, and farms, which offer a suitable habitat for the virus's rodent hosts. Areas where rodents may live are potential sites where people may be exposed to the virus. In the US and Canada, the Sin Nombre hantavirus is responsible for the majority of cases of hantavirus infection. The host of the Sin Nombre virus is the deer mouse. The hantavirus that causes human illness in the US are not known to be transmitted by any types of animals other than certain species of rodents.

The rodents shed the virus in their urine, droppings, and saliva. The virus is mainly transmitted to people when they breathe in the air contaminated with the virus. When fresh rodent urine stir up, tiny droplets containing the virus get into the air known as airborne transmission. If a rodent with the virus bites someone, the virus may be spread to that person. In Chile and Argentina, rare cases of person to person transmission have occurred among close contacts of a person who was ill with a type of hantavirus.
