One of my personal favorite songs growing up. I still listen to this song today. The famous song was created before CCR was disbanded. John Fogerty mentions "the rain" frequently throughout the entire song. The rain, most likely meaning depression sums up the time period pretty well. John asks the listener, "Have you ever seen the rain?" Men from all over the USA had been drafted and were fighting in Vietnam. The hard times were most definitely getting to people. The lyrics to this song put it at number one on my list.

Another CCR song, and another one of my favorite songs of the time period. The song is frequently featured in movies created in the 70's and movied created about the Vietnam War. From 1940 to 1973, Men were entered into a draft lottery and if their number was selected, they were to server in our military. 2 million men were selected to fight the Vietnam forces. The song is about someone who was lucky and was not drafted for the Vietnam war.

Number three on my list, the famous Rolling Stones song. "Ooh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Ooh yeah, I'm gonna fade away"
The storm, is a metaphor for the on going Vietnam war. At the time the song was written, there was a lot of tension. Men from 18-25 faced the threat of being drafted. Being out of cover was very dangerous, "If i don't get some shelter, ooh yea, i'm gonna fade away." Explosions and enemy gunfire were always a threat.

This song is about families at home during the war. "Fathers are pleading, lovers are all alone
Mothers are praying--send our sons back home." Families were worried sick about their loved ones being shipped across the world to fight. "The boys" are all the Americans that left to stop the spread of communism. All Freda Payne wants is for the boys to come home. The uplifting beat and genius lyrics put this song at number 4.

With a melancholy beat and sad lyrics, Johnny Wright takes number 5. The song is about a man saying goodbye to his lover, and saying hello to his new life abroad in Vietnam. "Kiss, me goodbye and write me while I'm gone
Good, bye, my sweetheart, Hello Viet, nam." The sad lyrics are a perfect fit for the time. Although I normally don't like country music, this song is amazing.

Another CCR song. They made THE best Vietnam songs. Most of the fighting terrain in Vietnam was jungle. And although Fogerty claims that this song is a protest to gun culture, the lyrics describe a man in a jungle surrounded by Vietnamese infantry. "Thought I heard a rumbling, calling to my name
Two hundred million guns are loaded, Satan cries, "Take aim"'
“rumbling” symbolizes the effects of heavy shelling by both the NVA/Viet Cong and the US Forces. Through a “rolling thunder” campaign (mentioned directly later in the song), the USAF dropped heavy bomb loads all over the country.

Many Americans were not opposed to going to war with Vietnam. But hundreds of millions of people protested the war on Vietnam. Protestors were later called "Hippys." But hippys did not only protest war, they protested racism, gun violence and many more things. Phil Ochs tells Americans to reconsider and evaluate why we should fight.

Another protest to the war on Vietnam. Barry McGuire things war is going to tear the world up beyond repair. "If the button is pushed, there's no running away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave."
The Eastern World, Asia, was in the midst of a communist revolution. Vietnam had the support of The Soviet Union, and China. Barry knows this war will cause chaos and destruction. His message is to save the world with peace.

I think it's important to recognize other events happening during this time period. On May 4, 1970, Nixon sent the National Guard to Kentucky State University. Protestors to the war were assembled on campus when suddenly, gunshots were fired. Four unarmed students were killed. Neil Young released this song about the tragedy ten days after it happened."Four dead in Ohio (Whoa!)
Four dead in Ohio (four)
Four dead in Ohio (Ah!)"

Another song about the killing of the four Kentucky State students. Buffalo Springfield wrote this song about college kids speaking their mind."There's battle lines being drawn
And nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Are gettin’ so much resistance from behind." References to "the heat" are about the National Guard. They shot and killed four innocent college students. A catchy hook and upbeat tune gives it the final spot in my list.
