So you can know how long ago these humans lived. A paleontologist investigates this by looking at the ratio between normal carbon and radioactive carbon. In that way, they can see exactly how old a bone is. The only disadvantage of this method is that they can not see how old a bone is when it is over 50.000 years old, because then the carbon level would be too low to measure. But it is also possible to look at the layers of the earth in which the bone was found and determine the sediment deposition rate. Then they can gather information about the age from bones that date back over 50.000 years ago.
A paleontologist can also discover what early humans looked like. By assembling the bones and making a prophecy of what they have looked like. They look especially closely at the shapes of the bones.
