The thing I love most about working in the construction industry is being part of teams to build projects that make a difference to the world around us. For example I was part of a team that built a hospital in Wales, which opened the ward block a year early to treat COVID-19 patients.
Jennifer: I love the variety of projects, working with people from a range of experiences (all ages and background, hands-on learnt skills and 'book' learning) and technical specialisms (e.g. engineers, ecologists, archaeologists, landscape architects, 3D-modellers) on a daily basis and seeing the final results of what we can achieve and build working together.

You have to remember each university has certain mandatory courses that all civil engineering degrees have to include, but they each have different optional modules depending on what the institution specialises in. I think it's also important to realise that there are two groups of university's for engineering degrees. There are those that teach general engineering (e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, Durham) and those where you study a discipline for the duration of your course such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc. (e.g. Bath, Southampton, Bristol). I think the first thing you have to decide is whether you want to complete a general engineering or specific engineering degree.
Jennifer: Choosing a university. 1. Think about where you want to be, do you want to be close to home or further afield. 2. Consider how you want to learn/best learning style for you as different university have different ways of structuring of their courses. 3. Research the best ratings in your subject area. 4. Read through the course information and student experiences for the uni to help make your choice.

It is important that the team you manage feel able to come to you with any concerns, whether its about the technical work, behaviours of the team member/colleagues/clients or mental well-being. You can achieve the same degree through a graduate apprenticeship but you are gaining real industry experience and learning from colleagues around you.
